I think you're both right, because 4 gauge sizes is the same as 2 wire sizes...since wire is not sold in odd numbered gauges, as far as I know.

I'm sure I'll be swiftly corrected if there is odd numbered wire available

I figured that would come up about 1 and x/0...I have always heard those referred to as cable, not wire, but I see technically, they're wire if there's only 1 conductor

Out of luck on beers here, nobody here drinks it.
 
If you look at the capacities of the different gauges of wire there is no real need for odd numbered gauges. Also with the difference between a 10 and 12 gauge wire being 5 amps that would not be effective in protecting a circuit.
