I would like to put a bigger carb on...but maybe I should look into that bracket just in case
I am thinking right now you probably don't have full throttle opening with your cable having so much play.

I am thinking for a low rpm 400 inch engine a 750 would be more than enough. I would bet it feels sluggish with the 850 too.

I think your right. I should put a bracket on and see what happens. I figured a bigger carb would make it run awesome according to what the guy said. Would this bracket work?

You mentioned that someone else had a carb on this motor that 'set you back in the seat'. Your comment above gets a 'bzzzt - no'. The bigger carb will open up the top end. The launching, set you in your seat is in the carb tuning and timing tuning. The 600 can be just as snappy as the 850 off the line. The only exception to this would be if you have a big stall - 4000 to 5000 rpm and sticky tires. And you're launching in that range.

I agree with some other posts that you need to get your tune straightened out first.

But in the big picture, the 600 is holding the top end back on a 400 cubic inch motor, but not until you see 5000+ rpms.

=====

And holy schmoly, get that throttle cable straightened out. Your TV cable looks taught as heck and the throttle cable is loosy goosy - not a game winning combination. I'm going to guess that you aren't getting close to full throttle when the pedal hits the floor.

Maybe that's the real issue. Previous owner had the right setup with the 750 carb. He sold it to the car dealer and they swapped out the carb before I bought it. So Maybe when they put that 600 on, they didn't set the cables correctly causing me to feel the lack of power....so the cable that's tight needs to be loose and the loose one needs to be tightened?

Do you know how to set the TV cable (lower cable)? And do you know how to check to confirm that you are getting full throttle with the throttle cable (upper cable)?

1st and foremost, you need to understand how to set a TV cable. IF you stick with that carb and TV cable, then you can use the factory TV set procedure. Tighten the cable up several notches by pressing on the bronze colored tab and pulling back on the cable. Then snap the throttle to full throttle by hand quickly. This will reset the TV cable - verify that there is still some tension on the TV cable at closed throttle and you should be OK. If there is not any tension (loose), the you'll need to redo or let us know and we'll give you different method.

Then on to the throttle cable. You need someone n the car to step on the throttle to WOT (with the engine off). Once they get the pedal on the floor, the you push on the throttle to try to open it farther,. If it will go farther, then you need to tighten up the cable. I'd guess from the looks of it that it will go further. You tighten the throttle cable by either shortening it or moving the the mounting bracket farther away from the carb.
