If you have cam duration in excess of 240@50 duration you should go Holley or sometype of spreadbore. 450+ cubic inches or larger could probably push that out a bit. Anytype of street car with that or less duration will be just as fast and better served with a Q-jet assuming they are both optimally tuned. Q-jets are harder to tune and have more variables with a bigger learning curve. Because of this they are often better set up by a pro. Any high rpm top end loss associated with Q-jet is more often associated with the bowl running empty than an air flow restriction.
This topic is 4 years old and still going strong! I vote Q-jet because it was on every car I've owned for the last 40 years or so. I learned how they work and how to modify them. Like everything else in life, fit the punishment to the crime. Street car, Q-jet. Race car, Holly or other fine brand. I don't have time to constantly fiddle with a tempermental carb every weekend, I just want to set it and forget it. Q-jets do that and work great when set up right. But no matter what carb you use, you need to research it and learn all about it because no carb can be expected to work 100% right out of the box except the one that came on your car.
I really have not even the slightest clue what the duration is on my cam... All I know is the lift is supposed to be .525 its got a pretty good lope to it though which makes me think its on the street strip side cam not just a mild performance cam.
Is there any way to find out the specs on the cam without taking it out? I don't think so but worth asking.
^2!
Also, make sure you have full linkage motion and pedal travel at the accelerator pedal. I once had a loose/bunched carpet restrict the accelerator pedal & linkage on one of my cars.
what is VE? and more importantly what can i do to my 4 barrel quad that'll give me more horsepower? i can honestly say ive never rebuilt one yet tho so if it involves taking it apart and re-jetting it or something crazy like that, im out
