I want to go to a 700r4 transmission in my 87 442. My 200r4 just blew up today. I have a small block 403 mildly built . I would like to put in a 700r4. What are the positive and negatives of running that combination?

You need an adapter plate, weak 3/4 clutch assembly.

You need an adapter to run it behind a 403,it’s heavier and it still has to have the tv cable adjusted properly and have correct geometry to operate and not burn up. The gear ratio is better in a 200 than a 700,If you are building it yourself a 200-4R is about the same money to build because they have some of the same inherent flaws

I wished I could build it. I just retired and picked up a 442 as a new hobby. Would you happen to have a part number for the adaptor?

Might be better to get the TH200-4R rebuilt to GN/GNX spec with stronger parts. In the long run might be the best way to go, no need of an adapter or another cross member (unless up grading to true duals)

The trans I have should be concitered a core because I have no history on it other than it’s a 87-90 if it has a tag I can verifie the year and model witch is either a camaro of firebird there are differences in 700r4’s also late 86 and newer are the ones you want they are identifiable by a arch cast in the case on the rh side looks like a half a mc Donald’s sign the f body tail housing has provisions for the torque arm so easy to know where it cane from

I appreciate the info. This is the third 200 I have had.I tried to re-use this but no one in my area will rebuild it. I live in southern Indiana and the best offer I had was to send mine off to jasper. They classified it as a custom job. They wanted me to pull it out ship it, wait 6-8 weeks for rebuild and then pay shipping back. I had one from a major franchise and it lasted about 3 months. In my neck of the woods the 2004r is bad news.
