It took me almost a year to find the 64-67 Chevelle 8.2" I was looking for. While I was looking I blew the 7.5" posi so I put in a 7.5" open carrier with 3.08 gears until my 8.2 showed up. I have a 355 vortec engine with a 5 speed stick so I had to be kind to the 7.5" rear end. Take some time, don't make changes just to make changes if it's not your end goal.

Some pretty poor advice in here honestly for what it sounds like you're wanting to do based on skill level and lack of funds. There is no reason not to upgrade the 7.5" rear, whether you get a shop to do a gear/posi swap for you or whether you buy a complete 7.5" setup with the gears you want already in it. You aren't going to break a 7.5 on the street with a mild 305 or even a mild 350.

As far as a cam swap on the 305, plenty of power can be had for not a crazy amount invested. You don't specifically need a roller cam, you're tripling the cost of the swap. You could swap in a hydraulic flat tappet kit (lifters, valve springs, timing set, cam) for around $500. Take a look at Comp Cams XE262H, that is probably the largest cam you'd want to go with on a stock headed/compression LG4.

I don't have any hard numbers to say for sure, however I do know how my stock LG4 drove/performed compared to the XE262H with full exhaust, holley carb, and a mild stall converter and it was a night and day difference. Comp Cams website also has a tool for estimating power/torque levels with their cams, the 305 with XE262H, full exhaust, dual plane intake, 600cfm carb came out to roughly 225hp/300tq.

if you don't know then how can you suggest he spend $500, I have to say that is poor advice and to rely on some online estimation tool is ridiculous...

Check out my signature, I guess having this exact setup isn't enough to suggest spending $500 on the cam setup? But suggesting to "just get a 350 and an 8.5" rearend" is a reasonable suggestion?

Not a hater...Im just suggesting that 225hp with factory, untouched heads is not likely. Ive heard it said before, that a 305 needs an extra 50hp to be considered slow. Let that sink in... The 305 was made to be a fuel efficient motor. Again, not hatin, educatin' 😉

Michaelweez,I have no doubt your combo woke up your 305. Im just leary of those advertised numbers.

Sure, I never claimed 225hp however, I stated that the Comp Cams online tool estimated that. If real world experience with the setup in a car I own isn't justification then I am not sure what is. My point for the original poster was that it sounded like he just wanted to tinker a bit with limited funds and wasn't looking for insane power levels, tossing $500 at the engine he has already to gain experience is certainly more cost effective and useful versus "get a 350 and an 8.5" rearend" in my opinion.
