It's a wolf in sheep's clothing and there's a lot more like it. Do you yall actually believe that big wheels slow these cars down?
Do you actually believe that they DON'T?
It's not about belief, it's about physics... Y'know... reality? Instead of fan-boy-ism?
Listen, you like big wheels, we get it. But don't tell me they aren't counter productive to performance. The difference may be somewhat small, and on a car like that, it might be hard to tell, but there is a difference. There's a reason why race cars run lightweight... well, lightweight everything!
I recently just took 5 lbs of sound deadening out of my car. Guess what? It's faster now. I can't tell by the seat of my pants, but it's got 5 less pounds in it, so it must be faster. It's impossible for it not to be. With wheels, because this weight isn't being accelerated in a straight line (it has to be accelerated in circles and along a line) it's even worse. How much worse? Depends on a lot of factors.
Take two exactly the same bone-stock g-bodies, leave one with stock 14s or 15s, then put 24s on the other one. Guess which one is faster? You only get one guess.
(I'd even go so far as to adjust rear end gear ratios so that the vehicle speed at the same engine RPM and transmission gear is the same. HINT: The one with the lighter wheels still wins!!!).
Even if the difference is only 5 HP... We all make little tweaks to our vehicles to make them perform better. Putting on large wheels IS going backwards, the line at which you start going backwards depends on a lot of things too. Brake fitment, tire availability in that rim size, ride height possibilities (or in the case of 24s, IMpossibilities) and a ton of other things come into play.
The line at which you start going backwards is debatable. One thing that I DO KNOW however, is that 24s are WAY past that line! By putting 24s on your car, you ARE trading performance for looks***, and you're paying more to do so. So go ahead, roll your 24s, but don't think they won't slow you down, crap out your gas mileage, and put more wear and tear on your running gear (ask the 4x4 guys about that when they put on larger tires! Same thing happens).
*** Personally i think big wheels look like crap anyways, but to each his own.
