Is it true that if the engine and starter didnt come with shims from the factory then it shouldnt need shims later? I was taught this I cant remember where from though.

I've owned over two dozen Oldsmobiles over the last 35 years (and worked on a bunch more) and I've never seen nor needed starter shims on one.

same with me with chevy and pontiac motors and I used different brands of starters and never used a shim

Well I'm not sure if the starter has shims now but at the shop they even said this is not the stock flywheel so that's why I was having the gap between the starts r and flywheel..wasn't something I would have known right off the back they had to droP my trans and a buddy of mines cutlass to figure it out..but enough of that now. Need a fan to put on my engine..a alternator and a radiator overflow tank

Well I was just wondering about shims because on my 400 sbc I have put 2 complete starters and an additional solenoid on it since last august. Everything starts out fine then after a couple weeks I get the dreaded high pitched screech. And yes the flywheel is good, I've checked it numerous times. The only thing I can think of is possibly the header which runs directly below the starter maybe heating it up because it only happens when I have been driving it awhile like when I stop and get gas and start it back up. Idk though im tired of messin with it . . . .

my car also makes that loud scream sound..i was told its the flywheel
It could be but I have also been told that my solenoid is faulty and not fully engaging because it also makes a lower zing noise sometimes. Its hard to explain but im sure someone that has experience with these issues will know what im talking about. Its pretty embarrassing when your sittin at a gas station and everyone is looking at your car and just as you go to leave it makes a horrid noise . . .

Sounds like the flywheel is bad. Went through this on my Grandma's truck. New starter would sound good for a lil while but the the flywheel would cause the starter gear to wear funny and it would start making noise. No amounts of shims would fix it. New flexplate and starter, and no more problems.

you might want to think about putting a remote solenoid like the fords, I use one and I like the fact that there is no hot wire to the starter until you hit the key and the solenoid is not bothered by heat

hey has anyone seen anyone selling a cheap running 350 olds or chevy in los angeles or somewhere close to that..?
