Our 79 Monte Carlo- Pro Touring Project

Yeah a cool deal, 300+ cars, all in what would normally be support classes. I think its UMP's attempt at an IMCA Supernationals type event. Not bad for a first year.

You just never know what we'll be testing on the Green Machine...

As we progress with the Green Machine we are finding the need for more serious racing products. So, we are trying some Penske's with UMI specific valving. We had good success with the Viking Warriors and outgrew them and replaced with Crusaders. The Crusader is a serious Pro Touring damper and works nicely. Then we tried our UMI valved Afco's with great success. Natural progression is to develop an ultra high end shock simply because the demand is there on occasion.

The cool thing is, the car performs awesome on the 5" UMI Afco monotube already. It's nice to know our budget shock is in the Penske ballpark.

Thanks very much for the update. Sounds cool.

As a racer, I always like new stuff like Penske's (duh, who doesn't).

but

This past year we've raced all of our cars on the same rear shock, the new UMI 5" monotube built by Afco. The valving was developed by UMI in conjunction with Sam Strano (14x SCCA National champ). The compression damping is fixed and the shape of the rebound curve is where the magic happens. We have this on or 2010 Camaro rear, 1999 Camaro rear, 72 LeMans rear and had it on the green machine. The damping curve is such that the shock works on all four cars. They have a special digressive curve so we can have high forces down low for responsiveness but not so high that they lift the inside rear tire during snap transition. Pretty cool stuff.

I'll echo the earlier tire p*rn post with - fastener p*rn! Mmmmm. Flex-top lock nuts. Oooooh. 12-point aircraft nuts. The way you guys thrash this car, you need that kind of hardware.

Hey, while I've got it out doing a blast and coat, I'm trying to decide if I should change rear end ratio from 3.73 to 3.42 or even 3.08?

Three things to consider are, since I am going to be limited to 275 rear rubber, the higher rear should help me hook up better, it would allow me to run most auto-x in 1st, and of course it increases [potential] top track speed.

On the latter, I am just curious what top speeds you tend to run at the different events? I know it will vary so a targeted average would be fine.

We currently have 3.42's and are considering 3.23's. I 100% agree it's nice to stretch 1st gear as long as possible. Also on auto-x, the AFR head 383 in the Green Machine pretty much blows the tires off at will in 1st or 2nd so there's no power trouble. Tires are 275/35-18 Rival S or RE71R.

Dakota Digital says 130 at Putnam and Pitt Race. Trap speeds on radar are 125 at Putnam so I'll say 125 is the max. There is more in the car coming up when we get the 421 installed and change to 315's on all four corners...
