I spotted Olds-Cool on IG recently - so glad that you’re enjoying your car D!!
It is truly an art piece +
Thanks Jim, and indeed I have!
The past 2 weekends have been jam packed with car related shenanigans and I’m way behind on updating everyone here about them.
Last Friday we drove 2 hours south to the city of Lethbridge Alberta, and once we got settled in our hotel room we left to meet up with
Cauterize and his lovely wife. Enjoyed a good meal and great bench racing over a burger and a brew with them, then washed the car and headed over to the main strip where every conceivable make and model of hot rod, musclecar and truck cruised the streets until 2 am.
Saturday I was up at dawn, and after making the prerequisite coffee run, we did the touristy thing and cruised the car some more. Saturday night was yet more cruising the strip, this time with a good friend that came from Saskatchewan, and
Cauterize in his G body Regal too. Literally thousands of people lined the streets to watch the spectacle and egg the drivers on for impromptu (and illegal) burnouts. It was absolutely awesome.
Sunday we put Olds Cool in the massive car show in the local park, this picture is looking over the top of the car at just one small corner of the park:
Proof of life and attendance pic. That’s my buddies ‘95
Caprice Classic wagon beside me, it’s sporting a 6.0L LS swap with a 5 speed, and buckets and console. His license tag reads LANDYAT:
After the show was done, we immediately hit the highway for the long trip home, and just outside of the Lethbridge city limits I noticed the voltmeter reading a little lower than normal. Out of town, 5:00 in the afternoon, and on a Sunday, I knew there wasn’t much I could do about it but press on. By the time we reached home, it was very apparent that the alternator was definitely not charging. Pulled the car into the garage with less than 10 volts left reading on the gauge, but it got us home.
Monday I slept 14 hours to recover from the insane weekend, and Tuesday I had to go back to work. But I found time to get a new alternator, this one a little higher amperage at 78 amps, and with a better HD cooling fan. It went on Tuesday night.
I worked the remainder of the week without incident, and this morning we loaded up and headed out once again. This time an hour and a half north to the small town of Olds Alberta for the 28th annual Rocket Roundup, an all Oldsmobile show presented by the Northern Lights Oldsmobile club. The pictures on Instagram that Jim is referring to are from that.
Oldsmobile heaven, and more ‘68 442’s and convertibles than I’ve ever seen in one place! (Also my favourite of the “A” body style)
And that’s just a smattering of what was there. Again, another proof of life and attendance pic, just to prove that we were there, and she ain’t no trailer queen:
That’s for all the naysayers that thought it was too nice to drive, and l never would. Pffft.
Little bit of a sad ending to today’s story though, several of these cars got caught and severely damaged in a bad hailstorm when they stayed for the club dinner. I had already left by then, and had nothing but hot, dry and sunny weather for the trip home.
I personally know the guys that own these 2 G bodies, they both got caught in the storm and apparently suffered significant damage:
So, yeah. I’ve definitely been putting the miles on old Olds Cool, and have been having a blast doing it. I even got interviewed today by a gentleman that wants to do an article on the car for his E-magazine. He asked a ton of questions and took a lot of notes and pictures. I’ll keep an eye on his website and let y’all know if anything comes of it.
Got some updating to do on The Juggernaut thread too, but that’s for another time and thread.
D.
**EDIT**
Looks like Olds Cool and both my buddies cars got a mention on the E-magazine today:
