Project Thread... my regal

What did this guy do to make the hood fly off of a practically new GT-R?? Forget to latch it? I didn't see or hear a bang..
I just drag raced for the first time myself last fall. With 2:56 gears and a plain Olds 307, my best time was 16.91. Forgot the mph but I still have the time slips. My first run was against a car a lot like yours. Mid-'80s Regal. SBC. I think he was in the 15s as well. Didn't have the nice two tone though.

It was an aftermarket carbon fiber hood. The "skin" peeled right off the frame. There wasn't very much glue at all and you could tell that most of the glue didn't even touch both pieces... About half of the front edge was glued, and there were only a couple other spots where the glue stuck. Fortunately the wind got a hold of the hood and lifted it right up- it didn't even hit his car...

Well... looks like I gotta re-do the intake gaskets... she started leaking oil pretty bad in the back... 🙁 I guess that's to be expected though... she did sit for a while before I bought her...

Update... got the other quadrajet 😀 . This one is good to go. Was redone before it was stored in a box in 1998. Got the carb bolted on tonight. Still have a few vacuum hoses to figure out, and then tune it, but it runs and the throttle response is MUCH better than the holley!! Ran out of daylight so pictures will have to wait until tomorrow...

What are the chances of you running your first quarter mile in this car......against arguably the fastest common production car of 2012? Too bad you couldn't have run against a Smart car or something.

Your trap speed suggests about 200-225 hp - what do you know about the engine?

It wasn't about who I was racing, but that was one sick car. It wasn't stock either... That thing was FAST!! I got my butt kicked but I don't care... it was fun!

As far as my engine, I don't really know much about it. The guy I bought the car from got it from a storage shed auction. There were some receipts from Summit, Jeg's, etc in the trunk. I know it's got a mild cam from summit, but that's about all I know other than what you can see from the outside of the motor... I'm assuming the compression ratio is fairly low because I can get away with regular gas if it's cooler out. It does prefer mid-grade...

Fixed the oil leak... wasn't the intake. Whoever built the car hooked up the mechanical oil pressure gauge down by the filter and put the switch for the idiot light back in the passage at the back of the intake. It was the switch for the idiot light that was leaking... I just pulled the switch and put a pipe plug in it's place. $3 and 10 minutes and it's fixed.

The Q-Jet is running great! Just gotta find the secondary choke pulloff and bracket... all of the choke related linkage is missing... When you floor it it goes "oh crap he floored it, what am I supposed to do, oh yeah, i remember now, WAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!" Runs beautiful if you stay out of the secondaries...

haha Reminds me of my car when I still had the factory q-jet and distributor on it. It started and ran well but it wasn't responsive. And when you're working with nearly 3,600 lbs, 2:56 gears, a mere 140 hp, and 4 lanes of busy highway to dart across, an unresponsive engine is the last thing you need.
