I just found the mileage problem. "and this is a 307 ". My daughter had a 307 in an 82' Riviera. I threw a boatload of money at it and it still sucked mpg-wise.

that's funny. the thing runs pretty well, just sucks on mileage

don't toss the posi in the garbage, that can be rebuilt with no problem and the parts are not that expensive but you should check to see if it's an Eaton that goes for more money than an Aburn

if you look beside the side gear if it's an Eaton you'll see a a clip and the tangs of the clutch pack sitting in a channel of about 3/4"...

so i babied this pig to the weekend. took the pumpkin cover off the free rear end and it turns out it's an open diff. no clutch pack or anything to speak of.

i don't want to complain, as it is free and appears to be in good shape. however it would have saved me a lot of gas money picking up the other diff that was only an hour away and also free.

anyhow, here is the free diff. hopefully i'll have them changed in a few hours. only problem i'm having so far is i can't get the damn diff retainer bolt out.

You mean the 5/16th's head long thin bolt that retains the spider gear pinion shaft? It's rare that they are not broken, and always a b*tch. Sometimes I can get it loose with an impact gun on "easy" and a 1/2" to 1/4" adapter with a six point 5/16th socket. A 12 point will round right off. If the head is broken off clean, after unscrewing it then you can fish the shaft out with a magnet. If it breaks halfway down the threads, you gotta get creative. In extreme cases I have beaten the carrier apart with a sledghammer just to get the damn thing out, but that defeats the purpose in your case.

that's exactly what i was about to post. i got the bolt loose, and only the threads came out. i can't tell, however, if all the threads came out or not. and now i have to find a magnet small enough to fit in the hole

Glad everything looks solid! Oh and the guy (496kid) with the posi for sale turned out to be a crook anyway
