Transmission Dilemma

i am not looking to get flamed here by saying this... opinions are just like belly buttons(everybody has one!)... the only th350 i have left here belongs to the 455 buick motor it was attached to and came out of an '86 regal i acquired years ago. albeit it was a really fun car to lay waste to tires with, it needed so much body work, suspension mods, little pieces everywhere... keeping track of all this stuff was a nightmare!

to me, sounds like he is already wanting the v8/overdrive package. when YOU look at a th350 sitting on the carport floor of a stranger's place, how much trust/faith do you have in it if you can't take it for a spin. if you're looking for an overdrive already... do you need more paperweights laying around? i'm looking to unload everything here regarding "spare" parts. i want my regal to be ready to go at the drop of a hat. my old shortbox pickup... same thing! i'm closer to 50 than 40. when travelling around, i drive for an hr or so at 80km/h for an hour, then 124km/h for the next hour and a bit... bomb around through Vancouver for 2 hrs or more on that hwy(85-100 depending on the time of day of course) then back up to 124km/hr for the next three hours. sea-level to 5000' elevation changes also. "total package" comes to mind here doesn't it? my situation isn't the same as others'. my old monte was fantastic with 2.41's, 229 c.i. and th350 28mpg cruising. it could muster a burnout if the road was wet, but that was it! what you do with your car decides what pieces you put in it.

my cousin has a two wheeler, likes the original transmission/box it came with, but disliked having to strap a jerry can to it. swapped out the sprockets for his own version of a poor man's overdrive, and rewards himself with an extra 50mi of cruise range. sleeping beside his bike in the middle of the night because the 1/2 way point fuel station was out of fuel, then losing a pint or two of his own fluids(due to mosquitoes) wasn't the best way to go cruising... i know it's different, but isn't it still the same?

My thinking there is less stress to learn to rebuild the transmission when you have time to rebuild it with the car on the road.....

I think you're right. It would be less stressful having the car on the road and rebuilding a "spare" transmission .

I've scrapped or sold a lot of parts I wish that I'd kept. Especially GM transmissions. I used to be able to find working TH350's for $100-$150 all the time. Now they're $250+. 700's are the same way. More expensive to find when you need one. I'm gonna try to keep any extra parts I can from now on.

I'm really tempted to try a 200-4R. I think I can get a used one with a 90 day warranty for around $250-$300.

they work well... mine came from the buick in my avatar. the small motor/3.42 pegleg/ and o/d combo allowed it a bit of "pep"... it also shifts your useable torque range around(just a bit, with lower rear gears of course). it's an affordable way into the overdrive crowd. if using a "stock" one, bear in mind they don't like being run around 50mph in overdrive... but it'll endure anything your 4.3 can toss its way. just don't lug it around locked up is what i'm saying... ya know? i'll go out on a limb here, but i "think" the station wagons had 2.73 gears in 'em too(i've been wrong before, according to the women i know) so the speedo gears will be spot on there(minus a small correction factor due to tire size differences...)
with those 2.73 gears, keep it out of overdrive until you're on the interstate. another plus is it has an additional 10 percent first gear torque over the th350, and will behave similarily to the old one you currently run. when i sourced mine years ago, i looked around at middle/late 80's full size station wagons with 307 olds motors. and since i was running Rochester 4bbl's, i'd grab the throttle linkage thingy's for the tv cable. yours likely has tbi on it, so peeking around "round" cars is the first place to start. caprice/impala... the square ones (5.0L) came with 2 different engines. olds motor with a o/d dash plate indicator is the first place to look.

good luck eh!

A master kit and converter is around $150-200. That is if it needs nothing else. If you have good non-lockup core. Some hard parts are getting harder to find for TH350 that makes them more expensive. They all need front and rear case bushings and a shim kit.

An ATSG book is probably $30. There are some tools you would need. A special set of snap ring pliers about $45 and a tool for compressing the low/reverse piston in the bottom of the case I think they are $35. Maybe a simple $70 press that will allow for easier compressing of the other three pistons.

You have to buy a converter, no one flushes them anymore, and you cannot flush a lock up converter.

I don't like playing transmission roulette, so I would go through a used one before I installed it, I don't need anymore practice...but, I have the tools and knowledge.

200R4 will work, better with a reprogramming kit if you don't have a genuine Monte SS or 442 core. I have only built about three...they are much more sensitive to pressure and TV cable set up. It is overdrive and will work standalone.

700R4 is only as good as the core. 88-92 ONLY, they rest are junk for what you want. Then it will need a 13 vane pump, Corvette or Trailblazer SS 2-4 servo, wide band, hardened sun shell, .500 boost valve and a new sprag in the 3-4 drum. That is the bare minimum, I normally add a Buick Turbo converter to use the 2250 stall. The 700R4 is also sensitive to TV cable set up and carb linkage geometry. It will require a modified crossmember and driveshaft change.

This press works on just about everything:

This one is for the low/reverse

Or this one:

This will work on most of it besides low/reverse

Need one of these or make one from a HUGE hose clamp. To align the front pump housing.

Just gotta weigh out the option.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Rebuilding a TH350 seems to be a reasonable goal within my budget. What about the 200-4R? If I can find one for $250 can I rebuild it for $300? I've heard the 350 is easy to rebuild and isn't too bad for a first timer like me. What about the 200-4R? Is it build-able to the first timer? Any certain manuals to get for it? Kits? I know some of you guys have built them. What was your experience? Any help is appreciated guys.

I had a 200-4r rebuilt by a shop in Calgary 17 years ago. Wouldn't hazard a guess. Are you near a Tech School?

post id: 5978592561 CL it does say obo, 11 days old. Could be a turd, who knows?

That one is testable, and he knows y won't go too far with it...you could ask him if it has good connecting rods in it for a 307 build...if not, it'll likely be because it has a fresh transmission in it. there's just something about fresh trannies that snaps cranks on 160k+ motors... and yeah, i'm bored. wrenched my rack moving a set of fresh 455 heads the other day without a warm-up. if motor is sound, it might only have reverse, hence derby car... does anybody need 15x7 steelies with 3-3/4" back spacing?

If I buy a 200-4R it'll be through work. (salvage yard) Most of the time salvage yards will test the engine and transmissions in cars when they inventory the car. Also, most of the yards that I would be buying from give a 90 day warranty. While I have bought used parts from individuals before, I like buying them from a yard. That 90 day warranty isn't as good as a transmission shop but it's a lot better than no warranty from some guy on Craigslist.

since you're a Moderator here don't you have the authority to take ownership of any transmission owned by a member....something like eminent domain....😀
