How will the car be driven? Around town? Highway? Combination of the two?
If you're leaning more on the "cheap side", then maybe a TH350 would be your choice.
An overdrive trans will run you considerably more.

200-4R. If I had it to do over, I would have built a 200-4R instead of the TH350 I built. They're geared very similar to a TH350 with the addition of overdrive and with some tricks and tweaks they can be made to handle plenty of power. Do a little research if you decide to go with a 200-4R. There are different "versions". Different codes on a little metal plaque towards the rear of the unit identify which vehicle it came from. Different cars got different valve bodies. Some were more performance oriented than others. I think the governor may have been different too. In addition to this there are 3 different bellhousing patterns as well. Chevy only, BOP only and a dual pattern that will fit either. The dual pattern seems to be the most common.

My 86 SS came with a dual pattern 200-4R case. Like Opie Knievel said, starting with the correct version will save some coin. The governor on the turbo Buicks allow the highest full throttle shifts. A little grinding to lighten the gov on my Monte allowed for a 5600 full throttle shift point which is probably why the 305 puked it's guts. A simple vacuum switch adapts converter lockup and a wire to the brake switch unlocks it.
