those bolts have a 5/8 head on them, mark the cap so it goes back on as it came off..you just need to remove the one that's in your way and there is no need to torque those bolts when you put it back on, just tighten them up good.

Just like riding a bike, once you have done it's no big deal. Reading my Chilton's again and feeling like a complete freakin' NoOb! I quote:After removing the lock, remove the axle shaft being careful to not damage the oil seal. Remove the oil seal by inserting the button end and pull the seal loose. use a slide hammer to remove bearing" Where is the oil seal?(inner or outer axle shaft) and what end is the button end? Inner or outer? I have never rode this bike before and am doing my homework so I don't crash! I already twisted off two backing plate bolts and do not want to make more work for my self.......

the axle seal is at the end of the tube and the bearing is just behind the seal..to remove the seal using the axle you just use the end of the axle where the c clip goes to pry the seal out

Thats what I was thinking but wasn't sure. I did the outer and chasers on my 91' Bird that was a cake walk, Didn't have to pull the shaft on that Mcpherson style set-up.... If I am pullen the bearings I probably should just replace the stock ones, Timkins.....

I have a long 3/8 steel shaft that I use to punch out the axle bearings..I just slide it through the axle tube on the opposite end and I can do it with the carrier still in place, the seal will come out with the bearing so I just leave them in place if I'm doing the bearings

I will get back at it after the work week, Christmas weekend or not. If your not ready to strangle me by now you will when this is all said and done. I will have plenty more questions cause I really do not want to screw this up! Thanks again > Mike

when you get to it I think you'll figure it out pretty easy. It sounds more complicated than it actually is. Plus I'm sitting here sipping on my bicardi black and eggnog so I'm a happy camper and don't want to strangle anyone.. 🙂

Buy extra for the weeks to come..... Once I get the axle shafts removed and confidence up, drillin' out my backing plate bolts out that twisted off/and will have to be re-tapped will be next on my agenda . That will seem like kids work. Enjoy your Rum, Damnit want another beer but 5:30 A.M. will be here before I know it :wtf: !

Uncertain weather or not I really wanted to mess with "rear end", I tackled and conquered a new approach in regards to my main issue >> 2 twisted off/broken small backing plate mounts. I knocked out one of the wheel studs and used that as "straight-in" drilling access point to drill out busted bolts. Bought some 6 inch long drill bits, cut them to 4 inches to provide better stability while drilling. Really happy this went alot better than what I had anticipated. Old bolts drilled out and not concerned with the threads. I'm going to get the following part>>

If you really don't want to pull the axles, go to Napa. We have the two-piece backing plates. They are Balkamp number 6411478. There not cheap but they come with new wheel cylinders and some hardware.
I'm not concerned with messing up the threads cause I will get long enough bolts to carry threw, add washer. nut and then backer locking nut...... Hate to brag but I kicked *ss today! Back to my rearend tho>> Not seeing a refill access for gear oil? Am I stupid or blind? Need to replace rear-end gasket obviously sense I gained access to investigate but don't see a fill point at the top to refill "Gear Oil"? Thanks- Mike

Look at the front passenger side above the large rib. You will see a plug that a 3/8 drive ratchet will fit into(may want to use a short extension), that is the fill plug. Add until it's level with the hole, or until it starts running back out lol. It will take about 2 qts of gear oil and one tube of limited slip additive if you have a posi rear.
