I have been to three places to get estimates on having the vinyl top replaced on the 84 and yes I would rather make it a hard top. I have the windows, the trim, and the trunk trim piece to do it but not the money to get into repainting or the bodywork. I was given prices from $400 to $1200. Has anyone had one done recently and know the going rate

In Iowa a local shop quoted me $300 if I prep the roof and gut the interior myself. $700+ if they have to do it all.

I was quoted around $400 a few years ago by a shop in my area (north side of Houston). They didn't specify how much or little disassembly/reassembly that included.

I don't understand. What do you mean when you say "if I keep the roof"?

I don't think much of that. Still, mine only has a few small cracks, and I really don't want to know what is underneath it.....

I would think putting a new one on top of the old one is never a good idea. Its just more layers to hold moisture and cause rust. Just like putting layer after layer of shingles on your house with the old rotten shingles and sheathing still underneath or putting fresh paint over top of old paint and bondo on your car, it may look ok at first but it will eventually come back to bite you.

It all depends how bad your old top

Another layer can keep the moisture out too
