After wasting time/money with a RockAuto Cardone "reman" Saginaw 800 steering box upgrade (Monte SS Z65) that popped the pitman shaft seal and snap ring out right after install (see photo), I put in a
TurnOne Delphi box last night. To say the TurnOne box is a treat would be a huge understatement. I'll admit it was a pricey upgrade, but after spending $$ on full QA1 Coil-Over, Tubular Suspension upgrades front/rear with new 17x8 wheels and tires coming I felt it wasn't worth trying to cut corners with cheap-o rebuilds. I did contact Lee Power Steering, and they were great as well but by the time I would have sent my original 800 box to them, with some upgrades I'd have been pretty close to TurnOne box, and it wouldn't be the better R&P valving.
Jeff at TurnOne was super helpful, and very responsive to phone calls, and emails. After ordering only took a few days to have my box shipped and delivered. Unit was packed in form fit foam, not loose, flopping around and double-boxed like the reman. Obviously I get that the "reman" was a "roll of the dice", hit or miss for the $120 vs TurnOne (or Lee) higher $$ option so lesson learned. Wasn't interested in the headache/hassle of returning/shipping and downtime to keep trying additional "remans" till I maybe got a good one, but that's just me; YMMV.
I couldn't be happier with the feel, ratio (12:1) and turning effort, it's perfect and what was most important to me is the "straight ahead" rolling down the highway steering input needed. It's tight on-center, and requires barely any input to stay centered, the reman box was all over the place needing constant input to stay in lane,
Should be getting the
17x8 YearOne SSII Chrome Rally wheels soon, and 245ZR17 BFG Comp2 tires to upgrade the 15x7 SSIII's, can't wait as the 15x7 limit my Disc Brake upgrades (have 2WD S10 Front Brake upgrade now).
Cheap reman, popped out the pitman shaft snap ring and seal walked out as well. Lucky I caught it before fluid leaked, and was making it bind/tight when turning left vs right.
