I put the shims behind the crank pulley so it lines up with the other pulleys, the way the belt goes from the crank to the water pump pulley which is smooth cause the back of the belt rides on it that picks up any discrepancy of the position of the pulleys but it is one of those things that I always like to fix..belt I got was too long, got the belt number from online in a forum so it must be a defective belt....
