Just doing some trimming and test fitting. Finally starting to look like a decent body shell considering this thing was complete junk. Still have lots of work to do but nice to see some parts back on it even if they aren’t permanently attached again.

Threw a second coat of flat black primer at the side panel for my radiator air induction shroud. Still seeing a few nicks and dimples so a third coat may be in order. Weekend plan may be to revisit the exhaust pipes and finish cleaning all the rusticles off them so that they can receive a coat of black high heat resistant header paint. They will never be pretty but the paint ought to keep them relatively free of new rust and be easy to recoat without having to dismantle the system. After that it is mock up the whole system and set my witness marks so that I can tack the various bits together and make it all one length of tube. Still have to cut down the nipples on the mufflers but may leave them long to get more overlap between the inner and outer pipes which should result in a better connection with more support. With the longer overlap I can go with stepped band clamps and get a connection that i may be able to disconnect without the use of a sawsall when the time comes.

While I was at it, I found a couple of rust specks poking through on the a pillars where the doors mount (I have no idea what that area is actually called) seemingly from underneath the primer. I’m guessing I didn’t have the surface all that clean when I sprayed it, but does anyone have an idea why that would happen?

Unless it was an epoxy primer, primers do not seal out moisture. They are porous, hence water/humidity will penetrate the coating and react with the air and bare steel to cause corrosion.

This is why all these guys that drive around in primer are killing their cars.
