Just as an unsolicited service to those who have chosen to periodically review my misadventures, I submit the two opening photos.
By way of identification, these are the pins that thread through the backing plate on a G-Body rear drum brake system, that then pick up a locating hole in the brake shoe, and then receive and support that nasty spring and cup assembly that has to be rotated 90 degrees to lock in position; all just to hang the shoes where they ought to be so that the rest of the story can be attached in turn.
The keen eyed, or magnifying glass equipped, will have immediately noticed that one is straight and could be re-used while the other is bent. The ruler has been placed between the two to emphasize the difference. I am honestly not sure why the bend is there but speculation has it that it is present to make braking while going around corners easier to accomplish?!?! (Insert sniggers here) It is possible that the pin got its bent on life during the removal of a brake drum sometime long ago in the distant past. Either that or it was an innocent bystander that got injured due to the e-brake cable deciding to semi-seize up. It was, as things fall out, the pin that did support the shoe that had the e-crake actuator lever attached to it. Whatever the reason it had to have happened in the distant past since the Monte hasn't seen the light of day except for when the main door is open since 2010. Right now, since it takes four (4) of these, 2 per side to hang shoes, and Napa sent only three, not three sets as I requested, (see diatribe above) I am waiting until some time next week for the remaining 9, the balance of what I asked for, to come in.
Right now I have two spare differentials sitting on the rack that I made for them, along with a 9" and an S-10 spare rear. They are all gimps; not a posi in the bunch but parts is parts and even 10 bolts are starting to get scarce around here. That said, the two 10 bolts are useable, whether as cores for a posi build, or as plug and play in the event of a failure. With that in mind, if I throw some pre-emptive mechanical love at them then they would be ready jic or worth more in the event someone comes calling.
As for the 9 inch, about all i know about it is that a friend and I scored it from a local vintage owner who was tearing down an old build to convert it into something more suitable to his tastes. Leaf spring perches and iron pumpkin. Thinking for that is an aluminum center chunk with the Daytona bearing support and a posi of some kind but keep the existing ring and pinion. I have no idea what the ratio is and it will take the cherry picker to pull that pumpkin; that sucker is just plain heavy. Again, it could be trading material if the necessity arose. Got rid of a bunch of 35 year old Dodge manual parts to an acquaintance who had just scored a 40 something Plymouth Coupe. Haven't seen him since so no joy on his progress (and that's a totally different website anyway). So I guess I am concentrating on Non-G projects this weekend.
