What Did You Do To Your G-Body Today? [2022]

Not back feeding. The CPU on your FI has a memory wire that is attached directly to the hot side of the battery. It is there to keep the memory in the processor from being lost when the rest of the power is off. Had one on the system that I just removed from my van and forgot that I had attached that wire to the hot side of the master off switch meaning that even if the car had no power and wouldn't even turn over on the key, the battery was still feeding the CPU to keep the memory active. During the disassembly, when I attempted to delete that wire, it shorted out on the firewall and tried to set the insulation on fire. What a PITA that was. Did manage to get it extracted but a section of the insulation melted so it will have to be repaired at some point to be useable again.

Today was a day of ignorance, as in, I ignored my Monte and never even went out to the shop. Ran errands and got gas for the S-10. Made it home and was just sitting down to breakfast when it started to rain. Bleah.

Took my 5 year old with me to the hangar to put antifreeze in the Camaro, the camper, and grab the air compressor to blow out the sprinklers. Once we got there, she started dinging me about driving grandpa's car so after the winterization was done, I fired up the Monte. A little easier said than done as the bowl was expectedly bone dry. I didn't have a funnel to fill it so I squirted some starting fluid down the thing, then the battery didn't have the grunt to fire it off. Should have just splashed it with gas. Whatever, out came the charger and after a couple squirt/fire/die events it had filled the bowl to keep itself running. Unfortunately in the meantime the choke had opened wide and one of the times I opened the accelerator to squirt some gas into it which disengaged the high idle. Thing took FOREVER to get some heat in it at the 400 RPM or so it struggled at. Here she is ready to go.

I put her on my lap and let her steer around the hangars. Too bad this thing doesn't have a fan or we could have spent more time letting her get the hang of it. When I went to back in I was reminded of the slight transmission leak it has.

I really wish I had more time for this thing. It needs a longer driveshaft to get up to any sort of speed, pinion angle set, upper control arm jam nuts set, couple brake line sections redone, interior wiring and component cleanup/replacement, and some real love put into tuning the q-jet. And an alignment. And a bunch of other stuff, but it could be enjoyed after a decent initial round of maintenance and fixes.

Just that time of the month for the old girl....put a pad down. 😉

That's why I bought the big ol' drain pan in the first place. It's gotta be a pan leak, easy kill. Fluid's nice and cherry red though.

Yup and as it runs it gets worse. Then it sits and it all comes out of the convertor so no winning here..

I finally got time to rerun my GPS speedometer wiring. Since I put the new motor in, it was getting interference from the distributor/ tach. I completely separated the tach and speedo wiring by running them as far away from each other as possible. Fired up the car and IT WORKS. No more math to keep track of miles driven while I'm breaking in the engine. I'll go a little more then the 500 miles before draining the break in oil. Just to play it safe.

This motor was broken in at the machine shop with a straight out of the Box quick fuel. I always had problems with it And ran my other carb since. now I'm finally getting around to looking at it. There was nothing in the bowls so I can't imagine where these brass filings On the metering blocks came from other than manufacturing.i lowered the pv and and am waiting for the larger nozzles to come in.20221015_140413.jpg20221015_160533.jpg

Refinished the hood and fenders on Sunday, there was too much dust in the finish to live with. And one big damn spider that dropped right out of nowhere onto a fresh painted fender. We wet sanded them down and sprayed yesterday afternoon in my garage with little to no wind and 70 degrees. We finished a little earlier than expected and installed the new hinges on the cowl and hung the passenger door. It’s on rough and needs all it’s guts reinstalled and the new weather seal so we can make the final adjustments. Slow going as of late but starting to get rolling again with work days.

Seen some of the Holley metering blocks come with brass sleeves in those holes directly above where the shavings are sitting. Old school speed trick to "tune" the carb was to drill them out a size or two. Maybe someone got silly, but have to wonder where and when it happened.
