Teflon paste works better than the tape if you're not already using it. I'd replace the cpvc piece and try again as it may be damaged.

Don't forget that's like going on a diet. 13 years to bulk up with 'treasures' and 'might need that later' takes a lot of decision time, and usually results in an outbreak of storage tubs. I have a whole dang house full of mix of stuff and tubs....I hate plumbing.
