I don't usually buy parts for FORDs, but my recently deceased mother in law is leaving me her 2012 Ford Focus S sedan in her will (probate until December). She was so proud of that car. I went with her 7 years ago this month to go help her buy it. The car sits mostly, and hasn't been moved in a while. I went to move it over at her house yesterday and exercise it some. No clicky. Battery drained. Hmm. Jumped off instantly, just needed charged. Drove it around a bit, and then brought it over to our house for a some light maintenance. Gonna clean it up, change the oil/filter and finally decided to fix this nagging little problem the car has. It bugs me, anyway.
The back package tray along the edge of the rear glass has "mesh vents" or some crap in it. It's got fuzzy carpet covering the panel. The rear vent mesh is made of stretchy foam like fabric. Guess what it does in the southern heat? Yep. Disintegrates. So there's these ragged holes back there. Otherwise, besides being a bit dirty, the car is virtually showroom new inside and out. I tried like heck to get her to at least tint the car windows, but she refused, and she didn't have a garage or carport, so...
The rub is, the car just turned over 3,345 miles on it yesterday. The rest of the car is holding up great in comparison, except that vent mesh. Being used to GM stuff, if this happened on the GMC or whatever, you would have to buy the entire part to fix it. So assuming that, I start to delve into the Ford part numbering system. HOLY CRAP. I hate their setup. I don't quite understand it, but the real part number "group" is buried within the long azz alpha-numeric code. I say group because for example, the part number of the rear package tray is something like 5446668 or some crap like that. So every package tray to fit the car, regardless of color, shares this same base part number. But the other letters and numbers that its buried in tells you more details about it, like color, and other junk. At least that's what I'm getting out of it.
Anyway, I find the right coded part number for the black cover which comes complete with the mesh, and that lists for $345.00!! Best price I could find online was around $248. Ugh. I really don't want to do that. So I start looking into fabric mesh that you can buy at a fabric store. Hmm. Looks like for about 15-20 bucks, I can get some mesh fabric (tent vents) and I'll cut that crap up and replace it. Save some bucks.
But then....
Ford actually had a better idea. On one of the diagrams, I find this other piece off to the side. The part was called something like a rear trim or something like that. I investigated more and found out IT WAS THE MESH!!!!!!!
List price is around $18 and change but I found it on ebay for like 16 bucks shipped. Meh, I could probably get it cheaper at the Ford dealer (helps to know parts guys everywhere) but I'd burn the savings in gas to go there and pay tax. Read the reviews on it, it appears Ford had issues with the OEM mesh crumbling away and now use this revised mesh that's stronger. It's also part of a TSB to replace older models with this issue. So this should be a MUCH CHEAPER fix.
It doesn't mean anything to the car or it's performance, but it's just one of those things that you know is there and it bugs the hell out of you.
Not this car, but this is what the damage looks like. Ugh.
And here's the fix. It's simple, remove panel with 4 push clips behind seat, and lift and pull straight out. Flip it over, clean up the old mesh glue points and use weahterstripping adhesive to glue in the new.
If it weren't for my mother in law, I'd never put a wrench on a Ford. But here we are...
