HVAC and insulation are in, got approval for cover from the county. Sheetrock starts today.

Kinda the great divide in construction. From rough to finish work. We're about a day away from being able to start masking off for paint on the exterior. Mostly just fine details on the siding trim and filler pieces under the doors.

Not technically a project, but I replaced the gas cap on my Impala. Now I need to see if the CEL will clear itself or if I'll need to get someone with an OBDII reader to clear it.

I also got a new ignition switch, lock cylinder and keys, and relay for my pain in the neck Trailblazer. I need to get it on the road for this weekend.

Pickup truck stuff in the rainier!

Helped my buddy load a bunch of stumps into the back yard wood pile, city took the tree down (about 3 cord worth) and asked if he wanted the wood or not, he said yes, well they left a 5ft diameter 8ft tall stump and all the wood cut into like 4ft long pieces dropped on the ground. Finally got the last 4-5 150 lb stump pieces moved tonight.

Where's the new trailer?

I have been freed of Mr. Mom duty as of this past Saturday - so I got my *ss back in the gym (but, resting the old injuries for 3 weeks was nice). I am on vacation until next Wed so I can tool around in the garage for a few long days - it'll be a nice change.

The Mrs is finally catching up on a bunch of projects around the house, the principle one being we have a modest sized home and too much sh...tuff. So she is systematically moving cr...tuff from one room to another and binning the unused redundant sh...things. I hate clutter.

What this did for me way it uncovered a few bins filled with toys from my youth - like Optimus Prime. Who promptly went on display on my dresser along with a bunch of our other Transformers. Better sitting out than hidden away in a bin. After than I got my old Porsche 993 GT2 RC car cleaned up with a fresh set of batteries - should be fun this weekend as I have the girls to myself on Saturday and we'll all have cars to drive now. I believe my nephew is also in from out West and he loves cars. I'll set up a track or something.

I don't usually buy parts for FORDs, but my recently deceased mother in law is leaving me her 2012 Ford Focus S sedan in her will (probate until December). She was so proud of that car. I went with her 7 years ago this month to go help her buy it. The car sits mostly, and hasn't been moved in a while. I went to move it over at her house yesterday and exercise it some. No clicky. Battery drained. Hmm. Jumped off instantly, just needed charged. Drove it around a bit, and then brought it over to our house for a some light maintenance. Gonna clean it up, change the oil/filter and finally decided to fix this nagging little problem the car has. It bugs me, anyway.

The back package tray along the edge of the rear glass has "mesh vents" or some crap in it. It's got fuzzy carpet covering the panel. The rear vent mesh is made of stretchy foam like fabric. Guess what it does in the southern heat? Yep. Disintegrates. So there's these ragged holes back there. Otherwise, besides being a bit dirty, the car is virtually showroom new inside and out. I tried like heck to get her to at least tint the car windows, but she refused, and she didn't have a garage or carport, so...

The rub is, the car just turned over 3,345 miles on it yesterday. The rest of the car is holding up great in comparison, except that vent mesh. Being used to GM stuff, if this happened on the GMC or whatever, you would have to buy the entire part to fix it. So assuming that, I start to delve into the Ford part numbering system. HOLY CRAP. I hate their setup. I don't quite understand it, but the real part number "group" is buried within the long azz alpha-numeric code. I say group because for example, the part number of the rear package tray is something like 5446668 or some crap like that. So every package tray to fit the car, regardless of color, shares this same base part number. But the other letters and numbers that its buried in tells you more details about it, like color, and other junk. At least that's what I'm getting out of it.

Anyway, I find the right coded part number for the black cover which comes complete with the mesh, and that lists for $345.00!! Best price I could find online was around $248. Ugh. I really don't want to do that. So I start looking into fabric mesh that you can buy at a fabric store. Hmm. Looks like for about 15-20 bucks, I can get some mesh fabric (tent vents) and I'll cut that crap up and replace it. Save some bucks.

But then....

Ford actually had a better idea. On one of the diagrams, I find this other piece off to the side. The part was called something like a rear trim or something like that. I investigated more and found out IT WAS THE MESH!!!!!!!

List price is around $18 and change but I found it on ebay for like 16 bucks shipped. Meh, I could probably get it cheaper at the Ford dealer (helps to know parts guys everywhere) but I'd burn the savings in gas to go there and pay tax. Read the reviews on it, it appears Ford had issues with the OEM mesh crumbling away and now use this revised mesh that's stronger. It's also part of a TSB to replace older models with this issue. So this should be a MUCH CHEAPER fix.

It doesn't mean anything to the car or it's performance, but it's just one of those things that you know is there and it bugs the hell out of you.

Not this car, but this is what the damage looks like. Ugh.

And here's the fix. It's simple, remove panel with 4 push clips behind seat, and lift and pull straight out. Flip it over, clean up the old mesh glue points and use weahterstripping adhesive to glue in the new.

If it weren't for my mother in law, I'd never put a wrench on a Ford. But here we are... 🙂

FORD FOCUS PART II

Well, I was wrong about the mileage on that Focus. It's actually 3,367. The 3345 was where it was when I left the MIL's house.

I made a oil change door jamb decal from my SOHIO recreation for the 87 442. Figured I'd personalize it a bit. 🙂 (covered up my phone number though)

I got some of those clear ones you poke in the upper corner of the windshield, but I don't have any UV resistant pens and keep forgetting to pick some up. This was more fun.
