Good news! I'm not an idiot!

Bad news: there are 2 different O.D. worm gears- 1.76" and 1.84". Fahk. AutoGear said they don't use 1.76s because the pencil/driven gears aren't available anymore. Double fahk.

Reason I say that is I see myself in your situation, no way to true the thing in a drill press. I'm willing to take a chance because I have multiple sets of knuckles. I'll only take the chance after I calculate the risk though. I think I'd know as soon as I slid the bolt in the hole if I got it right or not though. If I'm smart, I'll drill 2 sets and keep an extra pair of knuckles in the trailer as spares. You'd be surprised what passes as a consumable in road racing.

Just do a better job than I did keeping the drill straight & true during the duration of the process. The larger bits tend to pull you where they're going so it was a PITA.

I did the 2nd one on the shop table & w/o a doubt it's the better approach. I looked for a 'drill guide' to help keep the bits/process as plumb as possible but couldn't find anything that would work w/the 1/2" required chuck. I did find one set-up that you clamp your drill into but it looked liked the footprint of the base wouldn't work w/how I set things up. Since I had access to a magnetic-base portable drill press, I used it...

Since you only need 5/8" holes, a drill guide would work fine to do this on a flat surface. I put those pics up just as an idea of what I did to get it as plumb as possible. Took me more time to set-up than to drill a better hole vs doing it by hand (uni-bit to have a pilot groove; 3/4" pass, & final 7/8" pass).
