STILL plugging away at the renovations to the front of the house, but the recent heat wave has all but ground progress to a halt. Is been over 100 degrees here the last couple days without even so much as a breeze which is extremely uncharacteristic for us.
I gotta say, I love the warm weather as much as the next guy, but there comes a time when hot is just too hot. Especially to work in.
But that aside, I’ve tried to continue making headway and accomplish at least something every day. Together with the better half, we’ve managed to repaint all the railings, around the windows, the underside of the overhang framework, and the fascia board underneath the gutter along the full length of the house.
I’ve also got one set of the 3 pillars fully redone, I’m very proud and pleased with how it turned out.
Started demolition and restoration on the second set…
…all too happy to get rid of all this old cheap garbage finger-jointed pine bullshit:
I’ve replaced all that old crap with white PVC corner and base mouldings, it’ll stand up to the weather much better and not need painting every few years. No paint also means there’ll be none to start to peel and look like *ss.
Because I’m starting on the second set of pillars, it was time for the old cheap plastic number set that used to be mounted there to hit the circular file, and install something a little more modern and interesting in a different location. I chose to put them on the aforementioned fascia board under the gutter.
We found a cool set of bold black stand-off, LED backlit numbers at Home Despot that we both really liked.
I even splurged for the optional photocell that turns them on at dusk and off at dawn. Unfortunately the picture from a distance doesn’t do it justice, it looks yellow and washed out, but in person it’s bright, clear and gives a cool effect.
Up closer so the camera would take a more accurate picture, this is more how it looks in person:
The amount of work it took to do this simple little upgrade would boggle your mind, it entailed removing a section of the soffit above the veranda, drilling holes and fishing wires, and cursing the whole time because access in behind isn’t anywhere what you’d think. It literally took me the entire day Saturday to get it done, so you can imagine my delight in finding only the “8” would light up at first.
😩
Thankfully it was just a matter of switching a couple of the connections around, and it’s been right as rain ever since.
Gotta get through 2 more weeks of work, then the missus and I have a full week off together. She wants us to take Olds Cool on several day trips in and around Alberta here, so I’m really looking forward to that. Should be a couple of good photo ops there too.
That’s it for now guys, hope everyone is staying safe and cool and enjoying summer.
