Luckily for me, running a straight pipe is an option here anyways, so there's no need for such devices.

Same here, it just points to how many cats are getting ripped off. The Prius cats are the ones to get apparently.

Replaced another fuse, I mean wheel bearing on the Rainier, also known as the salt sloot.

I think this is 5 or 6 in the 90k miles that I've owned it. Started grumbling at around 75 mph so I thought I'd toss in a new timken since I've been running skf for the last 4 and they only last about 25k.

It was mildly bad since I could feel a little grinding every little bit and it's a bit less grumbly at road speed but it still is a little noisy at 70ish which might be tires or the drivers side since that probably has 20+k in it.

I also now noticed a whine at 2500-3k rpm which sounds suspiciously like a PS pump. It might have been because it was -10F out so the fluid might have been a bit stiff even though it sat in the garage for about 6hrs at 55F.

I will say the new heater in the garage is pure luxury and I am spoiled now. It was -10 to 0F outside and I was able to work in the garage with it like 55F in the garage the whole time and not have cold hands. Also was able to melt some of the ice and snow off the Rainier door jams so that's nice.

The $500-$600 to get the heater in was a little expensive but damn it makes working in the garage in the winter sooo much nicer.

Helped a friend replace the spring perches on his 98 Ranger. It was absolutely amazing how good of shape that thing is underneath, yet the rear hangers were gone. It's way better than my Silverado which is 4 years newer. It still has the original exhaust!

What are you torquing them to? Seems way too often for replacement.

Spec is 105ftlb but I just send it home with my wore out IR pneumatic impact these days.

They have a solid inner race that the axle spans entirely through so over torqing isn't applying any additional axial load to the actual bearing.

The first 2 I did torque to spec using a wrench and socket manually since I did them in a parking lot in college without a compressor and they still only got 25-35k out of them. I had worn bushings and ball joints for a few years I neglected to replace and I can't find a shop to actually give a crap about getting anything in the alignment to spec besides seetting the toe and sending it out the door so I'm sure there's some additional side load there.

Gmt360's having short wheel bearing life seems to be common. The ball bearing set I think is smaller than should be on these things.

It's just something I've come to accept.
