What did you do to your non-G body project today? [2022]

OOOOO! Now this is going to get complicated. . . A little bit anyway. A stepfather from my mothers previous marriage died in February of this year. State is just now getting around to distributing funds from his house being sold and other items.

Well as it turns out my mother's name was still on the title of the 1979 Ford Ranger. We just obtained it as of today thanks to my sister. I had just spent a lot of my savings to get the 81' Malibu out of the shop. Looks like I am going to have another project coming this summer

I remember this Truck from my childhood, it was Silver with a Red to Yellow Rainbow style graphic on its sides. Whom ever he hired to paint the truck did a shitty job, Bondo so thick you can make a stew out of it. . .but don't try that at home😊. Which is why it's rusted to this point.

Once I am finished with the Malibu I am going to take on this challenge. The Interior is not bad (Could be worse). Needs New Truck Bed, Rear Bumper and Driver side door. And the Rust underneath is just surface and can be dealt with. I have yet to find out why it doesn't run, but the Engine bay looks pretty darn good considering the rest of the exterior. Very likely I will, like the Malibu, be replacing the entire front end IE; Struts, Spindles, Tye Rods etc. . . Should make a tidy profit for my mother once it's done.

Any bodies sleeping it off in the back seat or stashed in the trunk for disposal?

Put my parts yard on my list of places to visit and went over there to pay off my account for month end. Y'all south of the Mason-Dixon probably do not deal with snow but up here, as pictures just posted elsewhere on the forum can testify, we can and do get the sh*tty white crap in copious amounts. Only benefit is that you can throw your beer outside and reduce your energy bill for the frig.

Anyway, with snow comes salt brine and that has an appetite for destruction, in my case one of the rims for my snow tires on the S-10. Turns out that the diaper buggy currently sitting in the yard has a set of rims on that match what I am using so off came two and in the truck box they went, complete with the caps, nuts, and their cute little plastic covers. Hee-hee-hee. No plans to do the rim swap until spring. The better of the two now resident will remain in stock as a jic and the two newer ones will get shod and racked until the returning of the season. Bleah.

Oh, yeah, right, total non sequitur here.....looking for a laptop to use for downloading the maps for the computer guidance system in my S-10. Anyone already involved in this map reading business got a recommendation for a make of L-T or amount of memory that it ought to have on the motherboard or anything else that might make this a trifle more palatable? Plan right now is a refurb from a local supplier.

Nick
find a used laptop on craigslist

Not a bad idea to do some hunting on CraigsList.

I don't think it needs to be a particularly powerful laptop either if all you're going to do is run fuel mapping software. you can either run win7 or linux with WINE (Window Emulator) installed. do a stripped-down win7 install, set it up to do minimal connections and browsing, use it only for that, and you should have no issues

With the memories and what all, I'd say you should keep it for yourself, notwithstanding as commendable as making more money for your mom is.

Make a nice hauler for the malibu to trailer.

I got a nice Alienware one from Facebook Marketplace, luckily I only use it for connecting to my TV but could tell the guy was trying to hide something and figured that the battery wasn't in good shape. Just something to check on, didn't matter to me so I didn't press it but for data logging and such would make a big problem

Have a local indie shop that deals in refurbs and trade-ins so the thought is to pay them a visit. As for choice of software I just happen to have a full up edition of Windows 7 still on the hutch shelf that comes with a clean registration vin. Could/might/maybe still be able to upload it to a recent model L-T and run mapping on that. Just not sure what level of compatibility between it and my router might exist.

Linux and its variants are a bit of a puzzle; no time spent with them at all. Good thing about them is that they are open software which can be scored as a freebie from the Net. Bad thing is that you need some programming skills to "adapt" them.

As for the mapping, I am primarily more interested in timing and ignition curve maps as every so often how my S-10 responds to foot input tends to lead me to believe that the previous owner may have been tweakie with the mapping at some point. it is already sitting on the spring to do list for new E-3's, cap, and rotor; possibly one adapted plug wire for either 1 or 3 due to tight quarters between the steering box and the exhaust manifolds. As to choice of plug, the current set of E-3's have been in there for at least five years and most of that being a case of short distacne commuter traffic and cold winter warm up idling. Personally I like them. 😛.
