What did you do to your non-G body project today? [2023]

Well, my S-10 is still not a happy camper and the culprit now appears to be the Fuel Injection delivery system. From the symptoms, I have an injector going bad. This variant is called the "Spider" because of the shape of the unit and how the delivery lines sort of look like spider legs. Wish they were made by spiders as a genuine Echlin Unit is muy mas $$$$ up here. Napa carries them so a phone call to my local shop is now on the list.

Apparently this gizmo is buried under the throttle body manifold and you have to clear almost the whole top of the engine off to get at it. SOAB!!

Meh, they're not that bad to get to. And if yours is original be ready for a pleasant surprise once those poppets are gone.

Down here they all used to be a pretty healthy chunk of change regardless of supplier the last time id priced one, but, that was many moons ago.

You do realize I too am working on tuning a q-jet for my own Monte, right? Easiest hook to set ever. What 4.3 doesn't need 750cfm worth of flow?

Quadra BOG, Quadra BOG Quadra Bog,...................... Imhotep, Imhotep, Imhotep; Nah............ different movie. While I might have considered one of those lumps for my 262 SBC V-8, not so much for the V-6 in my S-10, and definitely not for the 5.3 on my engine stand.

As to the question of "What 4.3 doesn't need 750 cfm worth of flow?" I would opine in response that it would be any engine for which that amount of flow is completely and thoroughly in excess of need. if there was a direct fit manifold for the application, a 500 cfm two barrel Holley would do the job just fine. Unfortunately the Ford base plate bolt pattern does not appear at the two barrel level on a SBC intake pattern manifolt; unless you have $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and know someone who owns a foundry and can pattern and cast you one.

As a total aside to all this is there actually is a two barrel version of the Q-jet that uses the same bolt pattern as the 4 barrel model and, as matters unfold, I do happen to have one sitting on the shelf down in the machine shop. It's kind of neat to look at because the back half where the secondaries would be is capped at the air horn level and hollow as seen from below. Not sure what it flows for cfm but do seem to recall that it was an Olds issue item sometime in the ancient past.

Man you are no fun. Plugging your reply up with facts and stuff.

Well, why not buy, or more likely, grab a free non-ccc qjet factory 4vvl intake off a 85-86 c/k series truck someone is giving away due to no demand, and slap a qjet to holkey 2bbl adapter on it?

V8 has the same design. Not a better idea from engineering at GM. Think they might have hired some from Brazil engineers that designed the starter under the intake.

Saw that similarity while I was trying to come up with a source that wasn't a cheap off-off shore knockoff being sold by a ??? vendor with no fixed address. The Echlin won't come cheap and I may have to wait on the delivery but at least there is a warranty on it. Not impressed by the "refurb" offerings and to buy a single injector strand is possible but how to identify the dud and do the swap is the kicker. Easier and safer to do the whole enchilada and start totally fresh.

As for the idea of the adapter, I actually did that way back when I had my 75 Monza with the V8/4spd package. Only difference was that the intake was a two barrel so the adapter had to mate the Holley 500 cfm base plate to theRochester 2GC flange. It did work but the Holley was used and back then I had no expertise in dismembering carburetors and tickling their guts. Now would be different but the carb would also be new so there is that. Both that old carb and a smaller 350 remain resident in a Holley box down in the shop.

Hmmm.... I'm thinking tunnel ram dual quad, sawzall or grinder to hood to make the hole, and call it good.
