200-4R rebuild diy

Has anyone done it? would you do it again or have it done? I have done a lot of research on hard parts needed and what parts would be necessary for my needs but with everything you always learn something new.

I have an 1987 cz-f trans and debating whether to do it myself. I know there are tons of reputable builders but looking for opinions and tips on folks who have done it themselves before.

Today I bought the hardened stator and hardened sun shell. As a gift I am getting the trans go hdr2 shift kit that comes with a ton of stuff. A full rebuild kit with thrust washers seals and pretty much what I need.

I will start a thread of my build one I start tearing it down.

Thanks. It has both boost valves and different options. The servo is s big plus. The servo alone normally cost as much as the kit.

The band is a wide band.

I'm also going to go non lock up on this build.

I was speaking with dave husek about converter options and he mentioned how today's non lock up converters are pretty efficient compared to older ones.

He didn't tell me to do one or the other but he also didn't discourage the non lock up. I made the decision to go non lock up based on our conversation.

That guy is a 200-4R encyclopedia. I'm sure I'll go over converters with him again amongst other things. But for now I'll go non lock up. Then again I'll start reading up on converters and change my mind again probably.

That makes sense. The old converters have on the average 10% slippage so the lock up was beneficial. If the newer converters are more efficient then that would help out in every gear. Good thing to know

if going non l/u you will need that valve setup for the pump. I'm a lock up guy as i do drive mine regularly. Locked up or slip(Heat, and I'm in Texas). Some slip is still slip where I'm from. Now if I was after the quickest pass at the strip, I do believe a nonLock is the way to go. Looks like you are on your way by the pix. A stiffer sonnax slide spring, hard pump rings and some solid Teflon rings for the shafts instead of the scarf cut might still be needed. I don't know what is included in your kits. That wide band will need a new or cut drum for the wide band to ride on. Dont take much off that drum or it becomes junk. http://www.turbobuick.com/forums/threads/direct-drum-machining.433080/

You also might need some thick steels to get the direct clearance set. I cheaped it out and just added an extra stock steel with the raybestos clutches I used.

I just finished my 700r4. Make sure you measure all clearances and air check too. First time I didn't...that's why it's referred to as my first try....
