BUILD THREAD 86 GP 2+2~Blown 6.0

$600 (with core credit) is reasonable. It’s amazing what an LS core goes for in different areas. I guess it describes the area, or amount of salt put in the roads.

Or lack thereof? Cars survive out here. Plus the west is weird with how it's populated. Stuff like this is way cheaper back out east.

Took 1st lq9 apart and the #3 cam journal was spun and fused to the cam. Since it was a warrantied engine I returned it for a replacement. I didn't care about the cam and can do bearings but I didn't know what was left behind in the block so I didn't want to mess with it. What got left behind in the oil passages, will the new bearings stay pressed in, etc. if it was a $200 scrapper engine id give it a shot but I've got a warranty im using it.

Replacement lq9 is apart and I replaced the cam, bearings and pan. I did bearings as the coast side on these old ones were really bumpy (not just worn babbit) and I borrowed a friends install tool. Easy and cheap with the engine out.

Pulled the valve springs out of the old heads and going to put them in the new heads. Wishy washy on if I'm sending them to the machine shop for a valve job or if I'm going to do a quick lap and send.

Blown up lq4 is going back to the salvage yard for a core. Whoever is the core buyer in this one is not getting their $300 worth it. Block is shot, heads are shot, crank is drilled for a pin so nobody is going to put that in a reman.

But also who is remanning LS's....

Well it's time.

I'm signed up for sick summer drag and drive this June so I've got a deadline.

Hauled the car back home last weekend after it's year slumber in the mouse house.

Saturday was a nice day so I used the snowblower I mean tugger and the floor jack under the rear end and flipped the car 180 so I could start getting to work. I dumped it trunk first in the garage last Sunday since it was 10F and I didn't want to deal with turning it in the driveway.

Picked a bad weekend to stop huffing brakeclean because I burned 2 cans cleaning up the heads today. Need to get some valve lapping compound and polish the seats out and then get the valve stem seals and springs back in.

Like Jack Daniel's - green label or red label....

Did you wear rubber gloves or did you find every nick and scrape on your fingers?

Glad to see 'it's time'.

I'm on the Sick Summer waitlist - time will tell - would love to participate with you. Starting and ending at Byron is great (2 visits in a week), bad (long *ss haul from sunny Upstate NY).

Red, always red

I have gotten smart and wear rubber gloves almost any time I am in the garage now. Finally found a pair that is comfortable and holds up.

My rough goal is to get the car running my March 1. Plan of attack is get the LQ9 buttoned up, clean and paint the frame and underhood, cut out all the Tcase and 4l60e controls from the wiring harness and drop the engine back in. Hopefully it's an early spring and I can get the car a few hundred street miles and at least 1 track outing before June.

Glad to see you got on the waitlist. NY to Byron is a long trip but selfishly I think it's worth it. There's a group of almost a dozen MN guys I know well going this year so should be fun.

Glad to see the 2+2 going back together, Jake. Good winter project!

12hrs, not as long as St. Louis, South Carolina or Orlando. I need to stop being a wimp and push the Sick people to get in (I’m pretty sure I can get in.)

I’ll have ALOT better idea, financially, by the middle of next month. 4L80 woes haha.
