A Fabricobbler's Guide to the Turbo Buick Galaxy- Cutlass Rehash

For the first time in my life I am not being a TOTAL tightwad-

The motor mounts on the carb turbo and SFI engines aren't broken, but even if I replaced them on the carb turbo when I built the car they are 13 years old (and I was even cheaper then so I highly assume they are just stock OEM 1980 mounts), and I know I didn't buy a set when I put the SFI engine in the Wagon, so I am likely dealing with 40 year old mounts. OK, I'll replace them.

I am OK spending more than $7 for some rubber OE style replacements so I thought I would look for aftermarket ones.

Look at aftermarket ones. COUGH. Nope. Going with $7 ones...

Doesn't HRParts sell just the DS separate? It would be the wise compromise. I got one of the first ones ever made for my old TR... it was a massive improvement over the torque strap/chain solution. Your stock $7 mounts lasted 13 years because the engine was gutless, the beans that should be put out with the new combo is going to eat them alive.

Also, you could just build one using the donor old mount for parts and dimensions.

They do sell them separate. I was hoping the aftermarket mounts weren't needed and they were just a turbo buick owner thing and they throw money at stuff because turbo-buick cult.

If you are saying they are worth it, they probably are....

One is worth it. Two is not.

I have made a point of buying improved mounts for all of our project cars over the years. It is good insurance for some of the hardest to service parts if something went wrong.

You could fabricate your own mounts using poly suspension bushings, similar to the mounts I swapped into my truck. Will cost you time but low on the spend....

Sent HRParts an email to see if they have a drivers motor mount in stock. Mike convinced me, I'll do the drivers, not the passengers. $140 (ouch) but to hit my timeline of May 1 I need to get the thing installed ASAP and the evening I'll spend putting a home made mount together can be better spent wiring or running hoses.

Gotta keep the parts river flowing!!!

For my records-

Parts cannoning all the stuff that I cut corners on or found out didn't work from when the engine was in the wagon.

Passenger rear wheel cylinder died in storage has been leaking all over my rim and tire and has permanently stained my mint Vector (great, grand....)
Graphite exhaust manifold gaskets suck and blow out under boost
Don't lean over the engine while it's running and put your elbow into the rad hose otherwise you will wear a hole into it when it rubs the water pump pulley
The wagon kept the siezed PS return fitting
Cork valve cover gaskets SUCK, permadry are much more better
Plastic sprayer fittings from the farm supply store shrink under coolant temp and then weep

Let's see what I can fabricobble up for to mount LS coils to turbo buick valvecovers without drilling into them or spending cubic dollars on billet brackets

'Bout time you spent some of that money on something other than the toilet home.

I used new stock mounts, and the RJC HD engine brace limiter thing that bolts to the bellhousing. I go if for a deal, and that deal was way cheaper than the RJC mounts. FWIW I put some thousands of miles on it and it worked perfectly fine.

I may upgrade to a DS mount when the 3.8 gets removed for the 4.5.

I am not a fan of that part. Not when TRs are so knock retard sensitive. A bobble shock on the PS makes more sense IMO.

I did find a vendor with an HR drivers mount in stock and it's on its way, otherwise I'd be waiting until HR bilds a new batch in a few weeks. Still need to get a passenger new on order.

My summit/McMaster parts cannon order didn't show up yet so I got the engine bay cleaned up and started getting the 4.1 ready to clean a few things up. Got high on paint and brakekleen fumes knocking off all the grime.

Had to pull the passenger fender to get the little tab out that holds the ECM bulkhead wiring harness grommet in so I'm a bit sour on that as I nicked the paint on the top of the door.

I give it about 2 minutes before that nice paint gets dirty or I leave a hose loose and it gets doused in oil

The elusive stock regular to 90 I never found originally, I can actually have my fpr not upside down now!
