Best security methods?

Just an extra FYI for the DIY alarm folks out there...it's been years since I installed, so alarm builds may have covered this by now, but I'd put fuses on all the light leads coming off your alarm brain. A thief can find a way to a light socket, short it, then purposefully trip the alarm. When your lights start to flash, the brain fries.

i think a good combination of whatever your neighborhood/city is like is perfect. Around where i live a Train Horn in the cab would definitely make someone jump and crap their pants and most likely just move on, a secret kill switch also would deter many other people.

The kill switch idea is good because first off the thief is going to want to short it, however with such a switch in place they'll need to find an alternative route, and quick and easy is the game, looking and staying isnt ideal.

Of course, you could always electrically engage your brakes if you do not do the right combination, or setup any sort of easy trip wire type technique, with the brakes on, even a quick repo truck (unless it is a flatbed) would even have a difficult time moving the car with the brakes engaged.

it all just depends on your vehicles setup, and the area in which you live, all valid ideas however. this has gotten me thinking!

well so far my anti theft device is my crappy paintjob(50 ft looker) and random interor parts in the cab and odd junk in the bed. so far so good. also i disconnect the battery because if i dont itll die.

For my Cutlass I'm going to use a variety of methods to secure it. When it's locked in my garage (which is also locked up) I'll have a steering column collar guard on it. I'll also have a removeable steering wheel setup as well (then again, maybe the guard can just slide off without a steering wheel on the car). I will also have some sort of ignition cutoff as well.

This will help in case I forget to shut the garage door and the car is just sitting there in the open.

For when I drive the car and park it in public, I'll put on the collar guard and the ignition cutoff will be there as well.

For all times, I plan on installing something like a zoom-bac. http://www.zoombak.com/
You can buy the transmitter on eBay for like $100 and it's like $150 a year. A thief would never suspect that on a 25+ year old car.

When I store the car for winter I was also thinking about leaving it up on jackstands in the locked garage as well so that'll be one more step for thieves to work thru, that would cost them a little time if they wanted to just try to tow the car. I guess they could just rip the car off the stands. Maybe I'll remove the wheels while it's up on the stands then.

Call me paranoid, but I already had one mint condition G Body stolen, it will not fkn happen again. Garage is alarmed, I like the aluminum bat idea.

I will also be getting a traditional car alarm, but may go with a carputer setup as well (www.mobile-effects.com)

You guys that have a "column pro-gard", do you think it would be possible to drill a hole in it to allow key usage while the collar is installed? Then it could be left on all the time.

Or is the steel hardened and would it be too hard to drill a hole thru? Just an idea.....

Also, if the steering wheel was removed, would a thief be able to slide the collar off? I know the turn signal and tilt stalks stick thru the holes of the collar, but can't those just be broken off? I know the turn signal is plastic

This has been a late night topic in my car circle many times.

Prevention is the best method, but for when they do succeed, I've always wanted a decent surveillance system outside and in the garage, one that continuously records onto a hard drive in an old PC tower(in the house), upwards of several months of back storage, with a four camera system available at Menard's for under $400. I am fortunate enough to even be able to discretely mount a camera in the upstairs window looking over my driveway.

One Idea that's been talked about a few times is a fog machine mounted in the trunk(somehow, but simply ported into the cabin), activated by an interior motion sensor(independent for an alarm system), Pretty simple, can't steel when you can't see. Of course the major drawback is the cost of a fog machine that can produce quickly in large volume, at least the $200 range for something that produces fog in under 10 seconds (yea you can get cheap ones that take forever to warm up, likely they will be finished by then, or down the road with the windows open). My buddies and I often thought about dissecting a cheap machine to hop it up, I mean hey, if I can build a 400hp sbc, I should be able to crank up a fog machine to be high performance.

So far my method is working...never finish the car and know one will want it! Just kidding, I'm sure many people would still take it.

i actually have 3 things for safety in my car, one being an alarm just to warn me. I also have the Grant No Wheel No Steal http://www.grantproducts.com/c-107-vehi ... urity.aspx

and i also have the steadfast column lock
http://www.steadfastautosecurity.com/steadfast.htm

you also have to be very careful where you park your vehicle. You have to atleast be able to see it, thats how i do it.

Im also going to add this anti theft device its called Ravelco, my friend has this on all his cars, they tried breaking into his GMC Yukon twice and they just quit.

heres a link of my cardomain page just scroll down and youll see my column with the Grant and Steadfast column lock

Hey Tony,

Is that steadfast column collar able to be left on all the time? ie...can you use the kay while it's installed to drive the car? or do you have to remove the steadfast every time you want to drive the car?

I can't tell for sure, but it looks like those chepa "pro-gard" ones on eBay you have to remove every time you want to drive the car

EDIT: Just looked over their instructions, that's a nice collar! Yes, you can leave it installed all the time and still use the key

A little pricey, but looks like it's definately worth it ($169)

Also Tony, does your horn still work with that Grant steering wheel and wheel removal system? Thanks!
