ok, so stock 7.8" is too short for sure. I went a few turns out and heres some pics. first is at zero lash plus 1/2 turn, second is when valve is open totally. I keep trying the dry erase markers method but it just rubs off.

My pushrods have alot of room to move around when they are going through the head. Should i get guide plates? im worried the rods will bend.

Like ritter said just the holes are enough. You shouldn't run guideplates when the heads have a guide hole already.

so im looking at a new harmonic balancer, and i have two choices, a 6 3/4" one, and a 8" one. What am i looking at when buying a new one? weight?

I prefer the 8" they dampen better. Some people will go for the smaller one for less rotating mass which would take less drag off the rotating assembly but for your purposes that isn't needed. Stick with a quality 8" balancer. The summit brand ones are actually pretty nice pieces and so are Pioneer. Don't go super cheap and end up having one that snaps off at the hub or separates from the rubber and you never can figure out timing haha.

looking good, I would recommend exchanging chrome timing cover though...I have bad luck with chrome leaking.
