I cannot believe how rough the edges are on the core support hood latch bracket. I curved the sharp edges and smoothed the sides. All the hours in my smoothed core support, I could not just paint this and bolt it on.

When I built the cold air plate and inlet last year, I noticed the charcoal canister needed moved over just a little. I decided to build a cover plate out of sheet metal to go over the ugly area. I need to go buy a small sheet of metal tomorrow but I got my template cut out. This will hide the ugly on the inner fender and allow me to put the canister where I want. I thought about relocating it under the inner fender but it leaves a big area open. Makes it look like something's missing. I knocked my charcoal canister over and noticed a few pieces of charcoal beside it. After checking it out, the port that goes to air cleaner is where its coming from. I took a piece of screen out of a faucet spout and put it over the back of a 3/8" drill bit. It shaped it to fit over the port and the hose will go over that. I will weld a one inch long, 3/8" steel line under my air cleaner base for the charcoal canister port. I done this on my El Camino and it does not smell like fuel under the hood anymore.

Looking good. When I did all my hood latches, hinges, etc, I straightened and smoothed all the edges also. Made for a nicer painted part.

I totally agree. I spent maybe 10 minutes on it and that is what will make it look so much nicer but noticed by none. Lol

Working on tid bits today. Got to shoot some primer so I'm trying to get all the stuff ready. For my fabricated cold air inlet plate that screws to the back of the core support, I dug through probably 50-75 factory screws to get 9 that have the same codes in the heads. I wire brushed them and shot them with Krylon brushed bronze. To me the color looks kinda like it could be a factory coating. I like to have different shades of blacks so everything does not look like it all got painted together.

On my RH inner fender, there is a rectangular area that had some holes in it. I made a plate out of sheet metal, used some 1/4x20 all thread cut about 3/8" long, drilled holes in the plate, and welded them in the drilled holes. I set them a bit low to get a good weld. After welding I ground them down and put on body filler. So basically it is a cover plate with hidden fasteners. This will hide the ugly.

What do you do about bruising the paint on the bolts with the tools when you put it together?

Ok. Was hoping you had a secret. Looking forward to seeing the fenders and hood on the car.

I rarely have to touch them up. I never let the sockets touch the washers and keep tension on the ratchet or nut drivers. Also, only do one good coat of spray paint to keep the chipping possibility down.
