Maybe they did a redesign to incorporate a safety feature in case of a failure, of coarse there would have been no previous knowledge of failures prompting this.;)

That's exactly what I thought when I saw that one.

So I finally dug my steering shaft out of my stash. It looks to have a much better design when it comes to the bushing end. It looks like if the bush failed, it would get sloppy but it would only be by a little each direction. I'm feeling a little better about the one I have. Also can't see any issues of steering shaft failures in Jeeps of that year range.

Here's some pics of mine.

It's out of a mid 90's Jeep Cherokee.

The Astro/Safari shafts don't have a rubber cushion to fail and there is never any issue of them being seized.

Another fine job by Chrysler engineering. Looks like they failed to do the DFMEA

I had to google what that meant,DFMEA = Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis.
It makes me wonder if there was ever a recall for this ??

I just might start looking for one of those.
The problem around here is that all the older stuff gets crushed.

I heard from Flaming River and here is their reply;
"Hi Guy,

Can you get me the shaft sizes of your column and box/rack?
Also, do you need a 2 or 3 u-joint set up?

Thank you,"

Do any of you guys have that info at your fingertips ??
If so,I will forward it to Flaming River.
Maybe we could get them to add G Body's to their product line.
They do have part numbers for trucks,Corvairs,Mustangs, etc.

Check the link in post # 33 above. The write up tells you everything you need to know (length, sizes, etc.).
