so I guess we should change over to a Ford engine since alot of Fords use a holley

I wouldn't use a Holley anymore either.

I do run Holley style carbs

Not to mention just about all the high HP cars ran Holley's or AFB's not Q-Jets from the factory

we ran a race holley in all our circle track cars, they are great if you want to run the car at wot . The car owner bugged me to try a holley 670 street avenger cause he's a holley expert but I got rid of that as soon as I could to put my quadrajet back on. You can build a 1000 cfm without too much trouble and there are plenty of forums about that...here a post from Cliff Ruggles on a forum...

"One of our customers uses a later model large cfm unit at 750hp. His car runs high 9's in the 1/4 mile at 136mph. He has at his disposal a Quick Fuel 1000cfm Holley, it runs no faster anyplace than the q-jet.

We have a Super Stock customer running mid-9's with a small block Chevy using a smaller "750" cfm unit, built from an early 1970's Chevy divorced choke truck carb.

My own engine uses a 1977 Pontiac carb, it makes close to 600hp, and powers my daily driven 73 Ventura to low 11's at over 120mph.....Cliff"

Had to take a nice long drive tonight, unfortunately in my Jeep, and thought about guys who don't like the quadrajet compared to other carbs. I don't see how anyone who does not know how to rebuild a quadrajet can say the quadrajet is an inferior carburator. I don't think I have met anyone who knows how to rebuild a quadrajet who preferred another carb over a quadrajet

Different strokes. More cores for us I guess.

I'm wondering how anyone can say something is no good when you really don't know anything about it...I just wish some of them would give up before they mangle and loose parts on a quadrajet.

I epoxied the plugs, and that seems to have solved the seeping issue. I did fiddle with the float level and I doubled up on the airhorn gasket. I sanded the paint off of the choke parts I painted, and it works better now. It still idles a touch high, I set it up for the factory settings for the carb, two turns out on the mixture screws, three turns on the fast idle screw, float level at 15/32, etc. It's upto the owner to tune it to his motor exactly once he picks it up.

Funny everyone on this board that has a problem with a carburetor has a Q-Jet
Actually there are WAY more problems with Edelbrock carbs, hands down at least on Oldsmobile V8's.

Ford's own carbs other than the Autolite 4100 were horrible, either pigs on fuel or just ran terrible. An inefficient Holley was an upgrade over their Autolite garbage. Other than the Thermoquad, Dodge's carbs also sucked. The Quadrajet, Dualjet, 2GC and Variajet all gave GM, along with less flakey ignitons, made them better cars. The new Street Demon 3 barrel is an improved version of the Thermoquad and the only new street driven carb to consider for manners, mileage and fun, just like the Qjet. Tell the Buick Stage 1, Olds 442 or Pontiac Super Duty owners the Qjet was no good for performance, all factory equipped.

How high is it idiling now?
