Timing Chain Inspection and Replacement

Is the fan, water pump, and harmonic balancer the only things I remove to get to the timing chain cover ?

I can't loosen the 3 bolts holding it in...

I've already removed the center bolt...(which by the way, was missing when I bought the car.)
 
This is as far as I can get today because the harmonic balancer tool and others don't come until this following week all sheduled for delivery different days of this upcoming week up until Friday.

I guess I missed it, Why is there a need to replace the timing tab w/something different?

Also, take the time to measure the dimension between the balancer & timing cover as it currently sits. You want to make sure you get it seated where it was when you put things back together. Take a pic or 2 of the timing chain & gears for reference as well. Focus on where the timing 'dots' are on each of the gears. These can't be disturbed. If anything is moved, you're going to have to go through other procedures that can be avoided.

"The pre-1969 damper has the TDC line on the outer ring at the 2:30 o’clock position- or 2º before the keyway centerline- i.e. the line is to the LEFT of the keyway, looking at the front of the damper or engine. The keyway is seen in the ID of the damper nose.

The damper used from 1969 to about 1984 has the TDC line at the 2 o’clock position- or 10º before the keyway. You'll find that aftermarket dampers are the 10º type, as are the bolt-on tabs sold by the aftermarket, unless they're adjustable.

Warning Note: This includes the SBC 400, although the 400 damper is counterweighted because the engine is externally balanced. Do not mix and match internal and external balanced dampers!

A third timing mark was used from (some) 1978 to about 1995, and nearly all 1984-1995. It is at the 12 o’clock position- or 40º before the keyway. This damper uses a timing cover that has the tab welded on at about the 12 o'clock position. Professional Products lists the years for this type damper line as being 1984-1995 and is a 6-3/4” diameter damper."

My current timing tab is in the wrong position (blue in picture above).

The correct timing tab position for my engine is the 12'o'clock position (green in picture above). I know this because i used a TDC finder/cylinder stop tool and the timing groove matched the 12 o'clock position (which is why you see the red marker lines drawn on the timing cover.

Not only that, but a guy in a MCSS Facebook group showed me his bone stock 1984 305 H.O. timing tab, and it was in the 12 o'clock position.

To make sure the current timing tab was incorrect did you ensure where TDC was for that balancer? When guys toss together motors on the fly the nearest balancer usally goes on.

I dont see where you'd need the three jaw puller, NOT what you want to use to pull the balancer off with.
Good job so far getting it torn down.
