Is the fan, water pump, and harmonic balancer the only things I remove to get to the timing chain cover ?

That being said, I would buy a tach from the parts store, carefully un-package it, connect it under hood making sure it's correct for reading the V8 configuration & see what it says vs the one tucked in the dash. Keep things from getting dirty & return it within a day or two in new condition to get your money back.
OR..... Keep in in the tool box for easy future monitoring on any vehicle you need it for. I keep a small <3" tach in my 'tuning' tool box just for this purpose. I think the little tach was <$40. Good tool to have for flexible use on multiple vehicles.
Not a bad idea, I'll look into that !!

I would imagine that your mechanic relatives either have one or something else that will read RPM that will sit in the engine compartment, maybe they just use a spare tach to get a reading.
This one is similar to what I have.
Grandpa was the major mechanic, did mechanics on tanks and other military vehicles in Vietnam, he worked on Mopar vehicles. He's 76 tomorrow... I don't believe he has a timing light...did timing jobs with him before without timing light and never used a timing light with him.

I have two uncles who works on cars...one actually has strong mechanical experience and I believe he has a timing light like that...maybe, but he distances himself from the family. The other uncle does mechanics, but not like the other uncle. He's working on his Challenger R/T heads and other engine work right now at my grandparents, but they don't have this timing gun..

All I have is the dial type timing light.
