Is the fan, water pump, and harmonic balancer the only things I remove to get to the timing chain cover ?

Buy the equipment needed to do the measuring.
You'll need to properly set things up to use the degree wheel & dial-indicator for accuracy.
And, you'll need to research exactly how get it set-up for accuracy.

But, in doing so, you're starting to juggle more & more.

What's it called so I can look it up online ?

A "Degree Wheel and Dial Indicator" ?

Yea set up meaning removing the front engine assembly mounting brackets and drivers side head...

Wouldn't it be easier to just pull the camshaft out, read the ID numbers on it, and look up it's specifications ?

And what if you do that & can't ID the cam from the numbers?

At that point, what is it you're gaining?

Are there camshafts out there with no ID markings ? If this is a stock cam, shouldn't it have a part number ?
Have my timing chain cover off as well (because of a leak) and going to replace the chain set. Just lining up the dots on the 2 sprockets and replacing the set. With the crank at 12 o clock and the marks lined up you are either TDC of #1, or TDC #6. I put my cam in years ago so I know what it is (Comp Cam), took the cam gear off , no ID on the end, it's on the opposite end of the cam. To find out would need to take the intake off, rockers, push rods, liters, cam, maybe rad to get cam out. Lots of work to ID the cam??

I can't 100% accurately answer that but I'm betting it's a yes. What I can answer correctly is that just because you can find some numbers after going through all the effort, it does not mean you're guaranteed to positively ID the cam. Read on.....

Like ostrich stated, it takes a bunch of disassembly effort.

I wanted to do some calculations so I pulled the tins off of a sbc 406 that we pulled out of a buddy's 71 El Camino in an attempt to determine what cam it had in place. Like ostrich's scenario, no numbers @ the front. So I pulled the cam valley plug off @ the back of the motor to see if there were any numbers at the back end. There were.

I started my google searches & found 3 possible hits. Which one is correct?

Looking at the specs of the 3 possible options were they all the same or different specs ?

Actually wanted to maybe upgrade the cam...been looking at this 1785 cam and lifter kit for this 305 of mine from Summit... https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-k00172#qanda

They say it's an easy install in a stock 305 motor, but I'm not too sure with the way this 305 is turning out to be a mystery Frankenstein engine...

Rechecked the engine block number on the engine last night again and just realized this was orginally an 80-84 2 bolt 305 block, but the head casting numbers say the heads are from a 305 H.O. motor...

I'm comfortable with that much work, as long as I don't have to remove the heads...

But something keeps telling me to remove the heads, for a number of reasons...
