What did you do to your G-Body today? [2019]

You work full time, live at home, have no wife or kids, what do you do with all your money? The reason people rebuilt engines right is for reliability and power. Slapping stuff together is fun, but not practical. Some times you have too and some times we do it just for fun. Either way I highly doubt an engine that has mismatched parts through together with last very long. I bet Joe's engine will run really good for a long trouble free time. I have a lot of engines out there I have rebuilt that have been running for a long time. Another thing is you have to know what you can and can't get away with slapping stuff together.
Joe's engine should run a very long time. I know swapping cranks and not balacing and align honing, and making every part weighing within .00001 gram of eachother isn't "correct". I need an engine that works. I dont care about power. My last engine lasted 14k miles. If this one lasts half of that I'll be satisfied for the ~$1200 im spending on it. I need it to work. Not spin to 7500 or make 600hp. Id be surprised if it cracks 175 at the wheels. And my money goes to my family. For the better part of a year Ive been basically broke keeping my dad's house his house. Among other things. Id like nothing more than to do this and that and this to this or any engine. But I can't.
 
And as Ive said, I hope I can do this. idk 100% if i can. If i can, great. If not, 2 week minimum setback to grind factory crank. It's not a real issue. I'm just trying to get it done when I have a large swath of time off.

I completely understand. If it was me, I would buy a cheep beater car and not rush your project. If you added up all your money and time keeping your junk together it would scare you.

Oh I've easilly got almost 10k into this car over nearly 5 years of ownership.
And I would buy a beater but, I sh*t you not, the landlord hates having cars in the driveway and in the street. Plus I live on the east side on a plow road, so parking in the street is begging to have your windows smashed or car towed, depending on season. It's a cliche, but once I get on my own literally nothing will stop me from doing what I want with my cars. Within the bounds of the law. 😛

If the cranks are different in ANY visual way, I'll have the stocker ground. On the off chance they're the same (casting number, both are from '71 low compression 350s), ill swap em. New crank will be done Friday, that will be the tell all day.
 
Changed steering column lower bowl, needed to tear down whole thing.

45-5000. Same as any bop engine.

My 455 Buick shifted past 6000rpm on hundreds of passes at the track although it wasn’t stock. TRW Pistons, stock polished rods, oiling mods, main studs, light weight valves and springs, balancing, etc. 6.85 in the 1/8th NA. Many passes with 250hp nitrous. Many more with 175hp. I had several friends with 455 Olds engines at about 5800rpm max. I’ve never seen the issues or fears decribed on this site with properly set up Buicks or Olds big blocks. Maybe it was the lack of ‘give a s**t that we had. My Caddy engine will be put through the same ‘abuse’. All of these cars had thousands of street miles on them. Balance that 350 with proper clearances and don’t cheap out on the springs, locks, and retainers.

This is gonna be a bone stock 8:1 350 with a super mild cam (.439 lift), because it was free. doubt it'll see the high side of 4000 too often, if it will even breathe that high. like I said, stock. stock.stock.stock.stock.stock.stock.stock.

If, and only if, the cranks have the same casting number, the counterweights are the same (I have digital calipers, it's not the best way but it's a way to measure thickness, etc), etc, I will use it as it's from a low compression '71 350 as well. If not, I guess I'll just have to have the factory one ground. If I can get away with it, yay. If not, oh well.
