Not mine, but a good friend's
2002 Corvette 6 speed convert quit running a few days ago. Crank/no start with crank sensor code. Now, the interesting (irritating) part is that this car is 18 years old, and has 37000 miles on it. It was sent to SLP when new to have their ZL7 package installed (by original owner).
LONG story short, they hacked the install badly. 1 7/8 equal length headers, and they rub on everything...A/C line, Oil level wiring, and yep, crank sensor harness extension. There is literally no place to run the wiring without it laying on the headers. How it made it this long is amazing to me. The extension harness had been totally melted together, and finally burned at least one of the 3 conducters through. All this despite being in a fiberglass wrap and foil/fiberglass sleeve. EVERYTHING is a PITA on this car. Mechanic shop we use wouldn't touch it, tech there said if it was his, he would pull all the SLP exhaust off and put OE back on it, and I'm inclined to agree. There is no place under the car to get a hand on anything past the headers. Pulling and reinstalling the starter was an adventure in holding your mouth juuuusst right to get it in and connected while wriggling the header around. And FWIW, IMO, behind the starter on the side of the block is a TERRIBLE place for a crank sensor.
Sadly, I think there is damage further up the engine harness, so I get to revisit this abomination again. I believe my advice to owner is going to be that when it's back up and running, trade/sell for a newer/unhacked one or ditch the SLP crap.
Maybe someday I'll actually get to do something to one of my own cars, although days like this really make me question whether I even have it in me anymore. Much respect to all you guys that have finished rides.
