Anyone in NJ have a 350/290 or 350/265?

No smog issue in NJ. Cars before 1995 (OBD2) are no longer inspected. I'm not looking for anything more that 300HP and 250-275 hp would fit the bill nicely for me. I'm also trying to simplify the swap and maintenance. I can swap over my current parts ( but I'll get a new water pump and distributor) and that's that. No customization.
I already installed an 200 4R trans and I'm work on the rear gears after the motor swap. Still running factory wheels, brakes, suspension. Maybe upgrade as the years go on.

Right now from a stand still it takes my 16 + seconds to get to 60 MPH. This car has no power, the motor is old and tired. Thanks again for the feedback.
OUCH 0-60 in 16 seconds! Either will be a big upgrade for you. I know buying a new motor can be stressful when you have so many options. But from what it sounds like you are looking for more reliability and a little power increase over all out power. Pick whichever motor that is in stock and has solid reviews on and get that car back on the road. Just learn from my mistakes if you go with any of the GM motors and remove the stupid brass bushing in the crankshaft.(Gm instructions state you don't need to)

Yes, that's it. I'm not looking for power where I need to use high octane gas and waste a lot of it. 265 HP should be plenty. There is a motor with vortex heads that is capable of running a mechanical fuel pump, but I'd have to change the cam (If I understand that correctly) or find a different solution. I'm guessing there is an electrical fuel pump of some kind.

Your simplest choices are the intank pump setup from a fuel injected turbo regal/4.3 monte carlo, or, an external inline electric fuel pump. Either will need you to add a fuel pressure regulator near your carb.

now you're talking customizations and I really want to avoid that or keep customizations really simple. So here is a motor that I could consider. It comes with a cam but I'd have to change it to account for a mechanical fuel pump. If there is an simple electrical pump I could install that will work for me. I don't want to get into in tank fuel pumps and return lines and such. No my goal for this car.

From what I remember, the differences from an older sbc vs. a Vortec era:

Oil pans are different (1pc crank seal vs 2pc.).
Flywheels are different (1pc vs 2pc bolt pattern).
Balancer needs to match timing set.
Intake.
Valve covers.
Fuel pump (early blocks have the FP boss, later don't; cam has to have FP lobe).
Exhaust should most change over (apparently there are some weird configurations that have an extra bolt hole requirement).

Not 100% sure on the distributor interchange.

This is the one I was looking @ for comparison to your 265/290 350's. I would inquire about the fuel pump lobe/eccentric info. If the installed cam has the fuel pump lobe, your fuel pump would change over.

I already checked and the cam does not have the lobe.

Here it is for $1400 less (2-bolt mains)... probably same rebuild shop (ATK), probably same warranty. When I was shopping-around for a crate 5.3L, I found they all came from ATK or sister shop in Mexico no matter who the retailer.
