BUILD THREAD 86 GP 2+2~Blown 6.0

Swapping gears in-car. You're a wild man. I did it (unsuccessfully) in my truck in the driveway about 10 years ago. I don't think I'll try that again unless if I have a lift.
C'mon man, where is your sense of adventure? There is not much that is more fun then putting together and taking apart 15 times to get the setup correct while laying on you back. And looking like your covered in war paint from the marking compound - prussian blue is my favorite to have everywhere except where it's supposed to be.

I'm young enough still that the soreness goes away by the middle of the next day 😛

These gears at least have the pinion depth scribed in so hopefully I can get the depth set in 1-2 tries.

Plus my creeper is comfy so when I get frustrated/tired I can just take a nap while i'm bathed in gear lube.

Frustrated??? Tired???

I can't believe that.

Is there another way?
Yes, rear axle out of car. Car on lift helps. The fact that his is a hobby car in the garage makes it a little less barbaric.

I'm getting too old for that.

Drove the old cones out and got a bearing purchased and the ID opened up to get setup ready.

Farted around with trying to get the rear cup in and just didn't have the right tooling to make it work.

Built a driver out of some left over parts on the lathe, hopefully that will get me where I need. Just hard aligning everything.

Tried pulling it in from the front, I need to build a heavier front plate, this one bent right away.

Tomorrow is a new day.

To be fair I am pretty barbaric haha

And to be fair this procedure does result in absolute filth + a wife that doesn't want to be within 5 feet of you because of the stench of 80/90

Did you crawl inside the pig and try making snow angels?

Got some lathe/mill work for another clutch slipper valve for Bruce's 442 for drag week. Same thing I have on this car but a bit cleaner and more production focused.

And got the bearing cups pounded in and the pinion set. Rough initial test says .036" shim when measuring with some parallels, feeler gauge and my rear narrowing fixture.

I had an epiphany that I can measure the depth with a dial indicator and mag base so I'm going to try that tomorrow and see if it repeats.
