In popularity only in my books, the SBO was a much better engine for many years, 70's through the early 80's, not old enough to have seen many 60's cars used. Our families 75 Cutlass and 81 Delta 88 were the best cars we owned. Another myth is how great the TH350 was, it failed in our 75 under little abuse and and saw one failed in a fairly low mile 76. Both cars with choked smog Olds 350's and well taken care of. I heard rumors of Whale oil coming out of ATF and causing issues, either way both failed, our 75 under much smoke picking up our new puppy. The SBO never got their "dog" reputation till the swirl port 307. I remember a few complaining about how gutless their cars were, I said my 81 Delta 88 was adequate, now I realize the difference, they were post 85 cars. I did get beat by a Mercury Mistake off the line, the shitty early style converter was half plugged, totally different car after removal and he wouldn't race me again.I don't think there was every much doubt. With more of them around than anyone could possibly count, and really the only GM thing being made anymore, the small block chevy reigns supreme.
Nice work on the install. Really great looking engine bay.Mark me down for 496 cubic inches of big, overweight, dead big block chubby! Sorry I have a bunch of LS friends that ask me why I went with the big block. Even tho their sh*t doesn't run 😛
