it's a good chance your transmissible has the duel bolt pattern

Okay I hope, I just really want to keep it in their so I can try to make some money back on this deal.

if you can get under the car take a look at the bell housing and you'll see if it's a duel pattern...this one in the picture has the duel bolt pattern

Well, GM built these cars with "corporate" engines, which were engines taken from all the GM brands for universal use, so IMO, it doesn't matter. For example, the V6 in your Olds is actually a Buick engine. The only "wrong" engine swap would be if you put in anything other than a GM.

EDIT: That knocking sounds horrible! The last engine I heard that sounded like that was a 4.0L in my wife's friend's Cherokee. She bought it that way. I told her I didn't think it would last long, but other people told her it was "normal for a Jeep 4.0L", so she drove it anyway. It gave up the ghost a week later.

Okay awesome cause I see a lot of people from here saying they would never do that to their cutlass and I felt as if I were disrespecting the Olds, but that does make a lot of sense and make feel a lot better.
Thanks so much for that.

Wow I bought this without a knock and it just started knocking i knew it wasn't right so I was not going to drive anymore after that.

Okay cool i will go out and check now.

Who cares whats in it? If you put anything other than a 3.8 in it then its not original. I dont hop on the purist bandwagon. Your still part of the big picture, the hot rod culture. I enjoy any car that anybody puts time into and cares about. Doesnt matter if it has an olds, buick, chevy, pontiac. There are arguments for both sides on which one is better or easier to put in. Your in a situation where ya cant be picky so do the chevy and later on if you want an olds then pick one up. As far as what you asked me earlier about finding out what motor it is, you would have to get the casting number off the drivers side back of the block. I am not sure if the newer style one piece seal engines are on the otherside or not. Cannot remember so anyway look on both sides and then report back or punch the number into google and it will tell you what you have. You need this engine bad though so if it ends up being a 305 that can get you down the road until you can upgrade later I would still do it. Goodluck and heres a pic of the location.

That's true very true.
I do love my car and I am in desperate need of a new engine so I will just keep this until or if it does break down or break down.

Okay awesome I will check it when they bring it by, they have to come take mine out first then bring it by then put it on their stand.
But when I get the number I will just type it into Google and on here so we can all look it up.

if it is a 305 then where the red circle is the engine will be marked 5.0....if it's a 350 it'll be 5.7

If it is a two piece rear seal block it WILL NOT say 5.0 or 5.7. It will just have a casting number. The newer single piece rear main seal blocks will say 5.0 or 5.7 though.

Yep thats correct, is this an 86 or newer? I must have missed it if it was. I was simply saying if its a two piece it isnt gonna have the liter stamped on it. If its one piece newer block is will.
