If you do the job I'd suggest using a Permatex sealer called "Right Stuff". Theres two different drying times. Get the longer one. My buddy turned me on to it and the stuffs pretty good. Hes done transmission pans with no gaskets and they done leak.I understand, but all I have right now is "just doing it" or I'm a sitting duck...
If need to be, I can drive the car to my grandparents house to fix it. My grandpa and uncles are mechanics and have all the space, experience, and tools I need to do anything...They're just old (grandparents), and I try my best to handle it on my own before coming to them...
I've swapped a motor from a '79 Impala, done plenty of top end motor work, and have removed and installed multiple transmissions in my life time...
Just saying, while I may not know some things I ask here in this forum, that doesn't mean I'm completely new to this kind of work...and believe me, if I didn't think I could do this, I wouldn't even ask how...

BTW, I'd sand down the rust on that pulley the best you can. Not good for the belt.Is the fan, water pump, and harmonic balancer the only things I remove to get to the timing chain cover ?View attachment 190780
Nope, the bolts got sealer on the threads. Look at the gasket. Then look at the pin. I primed the block with Dupont Variprime and sprayed it with acrylic enamel. Never cleaned the pins. When I put the cover on it was tight on the pin. Figured the bolts would suck it down to the block. It didnt. It tweaked the cover just enough to not compress the gasket and cause a nasty leak. It was dripping out of there pretty good. Enough to puddle under the car in a few minutes of run time.I know you mentioned the erratic idle first and the oil leak second. If the oil leak is your main concern, make sure you have a bolt plugging this hole first. Lots of timing covers have been replaced because oil was leaking from that bolt hole.View attachment 191009

I had two options after I take it out. Use that cover, try to get it flat again and use more sealer with a new gasket or do the same with a new cover. I spent a few bucks, bought a new cover and its painted sitting on a shelf waiting to go back on.
The cover on the wagon was tweaked even more. Guess I should havebeen paying way more attention when I was putting it on. Live and learn. Thats what happens when you do something as a hobby and not a living. LOL
The leak in the pics a couple of pages back is doubtfully going to be resolved by a a front cover gasket/seal replacement. Perhaps a cover, gasket and seal replacement, but I'll guess something else is leaking or the front cover is broke.We mostly don't get the whole story up front in these things, all of a sudden he's done transmissions, top end, engine swaps?
