Is the fan, water pump, and harmonic balancer the only things I remove to get to the timing chain cover ?

I'm seeing a lot of different brands of timing chain sets, and single and double roller timing chain sets.

How would I know exactly which one I will need if I need to replace the timing chain set ?
Autozone timing chain kits...

Single roller or double roller ?

Why would I need a double roller chain over a single roller chain ?

Single roller = a 'passing-grade' replacement part. Double Roller = heavier duty. Nothing wrong w/a quality single roller in a basic/stock motor.

As for the steering column option suggestions..... Please.... PLEASE, heed the warnings you are receiving. Aftermarket columns will most likely NOT be a direct replacement . Yes, you might save $$ vs. a better GM spec'd column & yes they're new but you'll likely pay for that decision w/the hassles of making sure things work as they should. I also would recommend trying to source a column from another 84 Monte that shares the same equipment as yours as that should help minimize your electrical connection struggles when doing the swap. This is especially true of cheaper import built columns. Several of my GM truck buddies regret buying the budget replacement columns for their trucks vs. an IDIDIT or Flaming River. Turn signal cams breaking easily, horns not working, ign switch issues..... within the 1st year of limited miles on their 'NEW" columns.

Nothing beats a 1:1 direct swap when it comes to stuff like this. I would seek a column from a member on a site such as this one or google search your exact make/model/year column from someone (someplace) that SPECIALIZES in repair/rebuild of GM columns of this era. You might even be better suited to have your current column rebuilt so it functions correctly & you know is a 1:1 install swap. Having your column rebuilt by a specialist would likely be cheaper vs buying a 'new' aftermarket/made in china part.

I'll look for a keyed factory steering column from another source before deciding to buy the aftermarket. I won't be ready for that job until maybe next weekend.

If double roller is heavier duty, then I want a double roller, but is it suitable for a basically stock motor ?

scoti ... The notes/description of the two Duralast double roller sets say ".200" and ".250"...

i.e. 👇🏾

Duralast Timing Set 73017-3 - Notes: Includes Chain. Double Roller .200"

Duralast Timing Set 78100 - Notes: Includes Chain. Double Roller .250"

...What are these numbers referring to and do they play an important part in choosing the correct timing chain ?

.250 and .200 are the size of the rollers the .250 would be the upgrade version of the other one but for a 305 I would probably save my money and buy the cheaper one.
