Unwrapped the new heads and found this.

Sadly enough, a bit of JB Weld would probably give you a sealing surface but that needs welded and machined to be correct again.

Bingo, that should have happened before the machine shop let them out the door.

Last night I dropped $800 in entry fees for the OK race and a cheater practice session for next weekend. After my issues last weekend I chickened out and found myself here tonight.

I checked the passenger head with a straight edge. I couldn't get a .003" feeler under it. Seems that perhaps the one radiator cap gets hot and let's go as I initially suspected? 1 session was not enough to instill confidence with the other cap, but 2 good head gaskets will do. These heads aren't going back on. Though within spec I want them legit decked and the seals on both are all over the place. Here I'd been blaming my first time garage hone job, but the seals indicate otherwise. It'll be nice to fire it up and not watch a bigass blue cloud want on by. Or maybe I'll miss it? It sure was entertaining to fire up the Red Dragon and fill someone else's cabin with half burnt Valvoline SAE40 VR1 'Murica dino oil. I intend to be back up and running tomorrow.

Since discovering the one head is a POS, the old heads are in fact going back on. I finished the worse of the 2, I found 1.5 thou of warpage so sounds well within spec. I've been googling for where they like to crack, so far concensus is combustion chambers and head bolt holes. Those check out, so if anyone has any more suggestions I'm all ears. These heads aren't perfect though.

All but 1 was mushroomed and didn't want to come out.

Don't ever use these POS seals. The metal case found its way through the motor at some point. They don't hold on very well either. I wasn't able to accurately verify installed height as the retainer wouldn't drop all the way into the tool. I measured artificially high at 1.85" and .600" retainer to seal clearance. Close enough, it's worked since I got the car in 2013.

The big@$$ gouge that sits exactly where the firing ring goes.
That's BS. That machine shop gets an official thumbs down.

I'd get the head deck cut and forget it.

I'm not sure how much can be chopped out of it. These heads are about .012" thinner than what came out of the car and even they had been shaved at some point.

If you ain't boostin' or spraying or overheating (plus you have reverse cooling) them they'll be fine. Might need shorter pushrods or thicker HGs to make up the difference.

Alternatively, you could also have the heads o-ringed and then boost or spray them.
