Sean's 78 Camaro Z28

Should we leave the wheels grey or paint them body color?

  • Leave grey

  • Paint blue to match the body car, the way the car was when new

Sunday morning I cleaned up the truck and drove out to the storage to get the Roadmaster out of jail for a few days. On the way home I spotted this. I figured this was as good a place to post it as any....

No, not Sean's car. I do think it was a 78 but with it not being a Z, it's a little hard to tell. I'm pretty sure he still had the TH350 in the car because he wasn't getting down the road very fast. I thought it was a pretty odd choice for pulling a jet ski but it's great to see another survivor out there being enjoyed.

No real updates on Sean's car. All good. Routine maintenance coming soon. We just have an overabundance of projects. That's it for now friends.

The not going fast was probably because the owner was overloaded and knew it.

Can't speak offhand to a 78 even though I used to own a 78z as well, but, I know earlier 70s camaros maxed out at 1000lb towing due to the unibody not having any dedicated rails built in to distribute towing weight. It was just stress into the rear sheetmetal, gm knew it, and slapped a super low gcwr on there.

Seadoo weighs in 600-1000# without a trailer. Then add the weight of that trailer in there.

Not much of an update but it's something. Last year I got my brother some custom front floor mats from Lloyd's Mats. They have the correct 77-78 only font embroidered on them. They are very nice.....

Thereafter, Sean asked me a few times to order the matching rears for him and then he'd reimburse me. I never got to it. Back in July, I went ahead and ordered them so I could give them to him for his birthday in mid August. The mats showed up within a week or so and I was fortunate to be home when they did and Sean wasn't here. I stashed them in my closet until his birthday. When he unwrapped them and opened the box, there were a pair of front mats, exactly like what he already had in there. Doah!

When I ordered the rears, I called Lloyd's. I couldn't come up with an email or invoice from the fronts. I just told the lady I wanted to order the rears to match the fronts I'd previously purchased. The customer service was excellent. I don't know what went wrong. The label on the box even called for rears...

So I called Lloyd's and explained what happened. I sent them pictures. The service was outstanding. They shipped out the rears and let us keep the extra fronts. Guys, these people are the real deal. If you want high quality made in USA mats from someone who stands behind their products, check out Lloyd's. They haven't been in the car that long yet but I think they have a 5 year warranty. When we built the car we put ACC mats in it. Sean's right heel rubbed through the driver's front mat pretty quick. I won't buy those again.

Anyway, here are a few shots of the rears in the car....

I guess that's it for now. We're waiting for cooler weather for a wash/wax/oil change on her. It's still hot here.

Thanks for following along friends.

Last weekend, we finally had some time to give the Camaro some attention. We changed the oil. It had been since April of 2021 but it still looked good. We're running the Mobil 1 Extended Performance and the Mobil 1 Filter in the 6.0. The bottom of the car and the underhood still look like a brand new car. I'm so proud of the work we did on this thing.

After that, we gave it a good wash, including a deep cleaning on the wheels with some fancy wheel cleaner that is safe for the clear coated wheels. The wheels had some grime on them that soap wouldn't take off. I bet I bought that wheel cleaner 6 months ago but we just hadn't gotten around to the wash job. The car stays inside, so it stays pretty clean. Here's Sean at work....

She was looking good when we pulled her into the garage....

Next Sean started waxing the upper surfaces while I slithered along the bottom of both sides with bug and tar remover. He drove through something at some point that soap wouldn't take off. I gave it a lot of attention to detail. After the wax job....

Then we took it out for a ride. What a great car. It's so fun to ride around in....

20221105_143159_copy_2000x1500.jpg

On the ride I thought I heard the exhaust rattling in the back. Sure enough a rubber isolator for one of the rear tailpipe hangers had just enough wear in it that the tailpipe would bang on the leaf spring. This weekend Sean replaced the rubber isolators on both sides easy fix. We also discovered a minor fuel leak on the return line to the tank where the rubber connects between the hard stainless frame and tank lines. We didn't have the fuel injection hose clamps that I wanted and I wasn't completely satisfied with what we had done when we put the car together so I had to order some supplies last weekend. We got that buttoned up yesterday as well. We checked our records last weekend and we did all the other maintenance last year (drain and refill cooling system, flush brakes, flush hydraulic clutch) so she's good to go for another year. I'm hoping Sean gets a chance to get it out and drive it some more soon.

Sean got the Camaro out a few Saturdays ago. He was in it and Dad was in the Galaxie. I got to ride in both the same morning. It was a good day. I got some good pics.....
