So yesterday I ordered hardened forward drum fro Art Carr. This morning I tell a couple of my friends about it. They proceed to tell me to return and not to spend any money yet. Not because The Art Carr's drum is a bad product but right before chritsmas I was talking about getting a billet forward drum from CK.

What happened next was really cool. On Christmas eve they ordered the billet drum as a Christmas gift. I didn't know they had gotten it so I ordered the drum from Art Carr yesterday. I was really thankful. These are two of my best friends that always help me and vice versa. Today I also received the teflon pump bushing.

The billet drum comes with teflon bushings too. Just an fyi the billet drum requires cutting the input shaft by .500 to fit it. I will post pics of that later on.

I'll return the Art Carr drum or sell it for what for what I paid.

Some progress I have made. Yesterday I switched out the forward drum piston from the stock to the billet one and and also put in the the rubber seals in the piston. I improvised on the tools since I'm not going to spend $100 plus dollars on transmission specific tools.

I also started doing the new bushings on the over run clutch, low reverse, od and od planetary. I used a screwdriver to tap some of them out and used bushing drivers to tap them in but the od clutch pack was the real pain I used the bushing drivers and a improvised puller to remove and install the bushing.

I'll be working on this most of Saturday and next week since I'm off from work.

So I've made some progress lately. I have replace all bushings and added teflon rings.

This is what the direct drum looked like before. I had it inspected at a local trans shop and it checked out good! Put a straight edge and it ins completely flat

After I used 400 grit sand paper and then 600 grit. The result is a nice usable surface. You want to make sure the surface is very smooth so you don't burn the band.

This is the inside of the direct drum. The center seal I left out which is part of the dual feed mod. I also have a bolt to the center support to complete the dual feed. The transgo kit I have has it's own version of the duak feed but I didn't use it as it requires drilling into the case. I am doing the dual feed the way the 200-4R builders do it.

Some springs for the direct clutch from the transgo kit.

This is the input shaft. with the billet drum the input shaft where it goes to the drum has to measure .500 inch from the base where you see the grease to the tip.

Over run clutch housing. I installed all new lip seals where specified. These lip seals cannot be forced in. There is a lip seal tool. But I used a .003 to .005 feller gauge to get them in. Sorry I don't have apic of the install but you can see the lip seals on the right of the drum. Make sure you get trans assembly gel. Do not use bearing grease or engine stuff in the trans.

I also installed a roller clutch

Dave Husek (One of the 200-4R Guru) Rebuilt the over drive planetary. I spent a few hours at his shop getting some parts and picking his brain.

Here is the over run assembled. I installed the solid teflon bushing which you don't see on on the planetary side. These stretch when installing. I slid my my old stator support on the solid teflon ring to resize it and it did the trick.

These are the solid teflon rings for the billet drum. These stretched out quite a bit. I used electrical tape around the rings pretty snug and left it for a couple of hours they got close to resizing back to normal but I took the tape off and finshed resizing the teflon ring with the center support.

This is the center support the threaded hole to your right is the one that gets a solid bolt for the dual feed mod.

Here is the assembly process up to the front ring gear which I did to get an initial clearance measurements.

Remanufactured rear planet. Planet clearances have to be between .009-.027

Rear planet torrington bearing. If your unit or rebuild kit has a plastic one DO NOT use it. My unit is a later cz-f which had all the updated torrington bearings.

Roller clutch. If the bearing pops out easily from your roller clutch replace it.

Planet gear race. Take note how the splines are on the top. The smooth part goes in first.

Be sure to put the bearing in first

A 4 tang washer goes underneath the sunshell (not shown in picture) on the lo/reverse side make sure to put trans jel to hold it onto the sunshell.

This is the sun gear for the sun shell froward planet. The smooth side faces up. The other side of this gear has a groove which faces towards the sun shell.

Front Carrier bearing tangs go into the gear.

Front Planet

Torrington bearing

Front ring gear

Bronze washer

Selective washer

Snap ring. Once you install this snap ring push the selective washer down so it sits flat then get a feeler gauge between the snap ring and selective washer, the clearance should be between .005 to .010. Mine is at .025 so I will be getting a thicker selective washer to get rid of the extra slack

Here I just put the direct drum center support and the od carrier to see what it looks like. If you look at the center support you can see where I put a hex bolt for the dual feed mod.

I still have a bit to go but I'm half way done. I need to get the selctive washer and hopefully get the transmission case hot tanked. I wish I brought it with me when I went to see Dave Husek. I will be selling my th350 soon to fund the converter for this trans.

After that I just need to assemble the trans.

Wish me luck,

Joe

To my total surprise, on my trip back east, I passed the Sonnax plant. Right up the road from the Vermont Country Store. I figured Sonnax would be in Michigan or California!

I didn't even know they were there! They have an excellent website, though. It has the feel of a Bentley...
